We try to observe meatless Fridays throughout the entire year (I can make a mean fish stick )! But I know that at certain times of the year, this abstience is waived. For example, last St. Patrick's Day some of the bishops waived this requirement.
So I was wondering, since it is Christmas, a time of feasting, what do we do tomorrow? It is also the feast of St. Thomas a Becket, a martyr. Is there a special menu?
Thanks for your inspirations. I'm always looking for new ideas when it comes to the menu.

Carole,
Every Sunday of the year is a solemnity. Every Sunday is also a holy day of obligation.
Friday of Christmas week is a solemnity although it is not a holy day of obligation.
I hadn't thought of going meat free tomorrow but I think it is acceptable.
Jenn has good advice on these topics.

We're in the Octave of Christmas. There is only one more octave, and that's the octave of Easter. Those 8 days are treated as another Christmas, so of course, no abstinence required.

I'm laughing to myself because there is no special things going on here! Still drowning here in Christmas family busyness!! For our food for this feast will be Christmas leftovers, and probably family get-togethers because of a special niece's 2nd birthday.
I'd suggest English/British foods, with a medieval flare.
A good English tea--high tea? What would Archbishop Becket eaten back then?

Jenn and Helen and anyone else who may know, I have a related question.
Many of us are saying a Novena right now for Amy, a mother on the CCM list who was diagnosed wth cancer just before Christmas. On CCM, I suggested that we add a small fast or sacrifice to the Novena--like giving up coffee or a snack each day. I was a bit worried that this was the wrong thing to suggest during Christmas, but the prayer request was so urgent I wanted to add fasting of some sort.
My question: is fasting in a limited way for this purpose allowed during this season? I hope I didn't steer the CCM moms in the wrong direction!

I just bought a Cathedral Bundt Pan at Tuesday Morning and am planning on using it tomorrow. We'll also watch Becket after the little ones are in bed. I haven't planned a menu yet, but it'll be something British and include ale or stout
Blessings,

Alice, there is nothing wrong with the suggestion at all. If you were doing it in the "spirit of the season" that would be incorrect, as we are in the midst of solemnities and feasting and celebration is more correct.
But to do a charitable act of offering up something for another? It's never discouraged or wrong at any time.

Brilliant! When I posted last night I was thinking what immediately comes to mind (of course it's because of that movie) are dark, drafty stone cathedrals and castles...but I had no idea how to incorporate it.
Unrelated, I have my eye on the Williams Sonoma Stadium bundt cake pan. With my big football fan here (and this weekend is going to be packed with bowl games) and his birthday next week, I think I need to get that one. Would it be a stretch to use it for feast days...say, Roman martyrs that died in the Colliseum?

Wonderful, Ladies! I now have some ideas.
I like the idea of the Cathedral Bundt Pan, but may have to wait until next year to add it to our celebration. Jenn, I think with a little icing you can make the Stadium bundt cake pan look just like the Colliseum!
I think that the Archbishop would have eaten a hearty meal, so we will go with one of my favorites--roast chicken, roast potatoes, and brussel sprouts. Well, maybe carrots--the children would throw a fit about the sprouts. But I remember that being one of their favorite meals when I was in London.
I will find some stout or ale to serve along with the meal. Dh will look for Becket and we will be set.
Thanks so much for your inspiration. You are truly helping me to bring the Liturgical Year into our home. (And Jenn, I would do a high tea, but I am not certain what that consists of--obviously more research is needed.)

Yeah. I keep opening the link and almost buying it. I really do think I need it, but I need to get the oven hooked up first.

What a great ale - too bad I couldn't have shared ! And too bad it can't be shipped to the US
The Cathedral cake turned out wonderfully. Unfortunately, my camera card was full and we didn't get a picture. The pan was deeply discounted - I only paid $11.24 - and they had several available. I can pick up a few more if anyone is interested in having one. I think shipping would probably be $4-5, so it would be much less expensive than the ones I saw online. Send me a PM if you're interested ~
Blessings,
Kym

They have a Fleur de Lis pan!! How cool...I need one for all the Marian feasts...the only problem is we'd eat way tooooo much cake.
I did find the silicone individual rose cupcake pans at a garage sale for $1. Haven't been successful at actually getting them out in one piece yet.
Wish I could see a picture Kym

Oh but you could get the
garland bunt pan with the mini versions of the cathedral, fleur-de-lis, and Bavaria bundt shapes. I see Target sells it.
Oh my look here's a rose. that would be great for Marian feasts days too!
And a
bouquet pan and mini roses and 12 little rose buds
Oh goodness there's too many options!!
FYI they also have a pdf on how to bake the perfect bundt cake
