I was wondering if any of you menopausal women out there have experienced migrane induced vertigo? After months of tests, my neurologist has a theory based on his experience that hormones off balance has created migraine with vertigo...the meds he prescribed have done nothing. It has been a constant (dizziness, pressure, sensitive to noise, light, movement, and nausea) since September 1. Any one ever heard of this or have similar experience? I am ready to look alternatives to the meds...
Thanks,
Christmas Blessings,
Sue

Not because he is menopausal, but my brother has suffered from this for years. It was very debilitating for him. I think the meds helped him when they finally diagnosed him (took forever) but I will ask him if he found any relief from any alternative remedies.

Sue, I'll be praying for you on this...
I suffer from these as well but, thankfully, they are not constant yet. No helpful advice, I'm afraid, but I've recently heard some anecdotal evidence that being dehydrated makes things worse. Guess who's now chugging the water around here...

I had massive inner ear difficulty in my mid 20s. It followed years of ear infections and antibiotics. I couldnt drive for a year at one pt nor lay on my back, bend over, roll over,.... I did try meds but they made me feel sedated and groggy.
I went on a super low sodium diet in case it was Meniere's (sp)and worked on retraining the ear. You basically shake your head vigorously which temporarily increases the vertigo but it did over time stop it.
I will pray for you. I know how upsetting vertigo can be. : /

I has a horrid time a year and a half ago when I stopped nursing. I really develped bad nasal and ear congestion during the last pregnancy - some of it due to being allergic to everything in the air inside and out. Anyway - I had a couple of episodes of the vertigo, nausea etc - could not even sit upright - it was terrifying. I had MRIs, catscans etc - and so the Menieres diagnosis was considered a possiblity. Praise God I have not had a reoccurence - though still struggle with the congestion issue. I am not on a low salt. But Kim - please share any things you did which helped you overcome the whole inner ear thing - i still have hearing tests and see an ENT every 6 months - and am especially scared because the ENT made a comment about inner ear problems could get worse in pregnancy.
One thing that I do want to share - with each of my vertigo episodes, I had been to the chiropractor to try and ease the congestion - and had strenuous neck, jaw and ear adjustments. One of my doctors (who is not against natural treatments or chiropractors) told me that maybe neck adjustments were not for me and some crystals were being dislodged in the inner ear. Anway - I have stopped the chiropractor - tough for me as it really helped me correct back pain after the twins were born

Thanks for all the input... hearing about other's experiences is helpful. To clarify a bit... the vertigo is not affecting what I can do, thank God. Mostly it is the migraine symptoms that are the biggest problem. Sensitive to sound and light and movement, nausea, pressure that moves around my head, whooziness (like my brain is on a rough sea!)(these are all constants) and when that is worse my muscles tighten up beginning in my neck and down... chest tightening, ribs aching. The docs didn't connect the muscle tightening and said it was a separate issue, but for sure when the pressure, lightheaded, fuzzies are bad the muscles are bad. I have had a several episodes of "vertigo" (the room spinning and needing to sit down, but that doesn't happen regularly).
It has been 4 months now. The Doc's theory is "migraine induced vertigo" brought on by menopause. That's the best diagnosis I heard after seeing docs who had no idea. I am trying to drink more water, Taffy. Maybe that will help, the low sodium, no caffiene did not help either.
Thanks again for responding,
Sue

I worried I wouldnt be able to get through a pg also I was so messed up. That wasn't the case though. I think for me it was all part of a massive physical breakdown. I initially went on an elimination diet and found that my migraines were triggered by corn - even tiny amts. Once I stopped that they also stopped. For a time I couldn't do any glutinous grains either or I got bad hives. I was completely sugar and yeast free in case the candida was a factor. I tried EVERYthing. Between the elimination of foods and my vegan diet I went down to 90 lbs and was very weak. I did start to heal without those triggers but I think now I could have sped up the process with a more nutrient dense diet.
Now I am following more of a Weston Price type of diet and am in the best health I have ever enjoyed. This last pregnancy was the best yet. So things can turn around unexpectedly! I did swell at the end of my pregnancies but it never affected my ears. I tend to agree with the Dr who discouraged aggressive neck adjustments. I did chiro. right at the beginning. It stopped the spinning vertigo but then I had this sensation of the floor rising and falling under me for quite some time.
I had also read that supplements like CoQ10 and gingko help because they increase blood flow/circulation to the tiny vessels of the inner ear. They may help with migraine also since migraines are supposed to be related to interupted blow flow.

Kim, would you mind describing how you went about the elimination diet? Both my oldest two boys and I could probably benefit from one but the logistics turn me off everytime. Did you eliminate one food at a time or did you do the rotation diet? Or is there another method?

You normally eliminate EVERYthing likely to cause problems and add them back one at a time. Usually you are down to chicken, brown rice, and mild veggies like carrots and lettuce and green beans. Citrus, corn, other grains, dairy, chocolate, and soy would get cycled in one at a time. You need to be on the clean diet for a couple weeks first. Then only one new food every 3 or 4 days.
