Hello everyone!
I've been enjoying reading through the treasury of information on these boards!
I was wondering, what would you recommend for our very first book on tape for car trips? I have 4 kids, ages 5 and under and am already getting the "Mommy, can we listen to (whatever their favorite music is)?" for the hundredth time! We aren't in the car too often and not usually for more than a half hour at a time. I'd like to start listening to books on tape and would like to hear some titles that you think would be good for beginners.
Also, where do you buy your books on tape? Do any of you make your own tape recordings rather than buying them?

For my children in your children's age range, the "Hank the Cowdog" tapes were pretty entertaining. The D'Aulaires' book of Greek Myths on tapes is great, too. And they all really enjoy the "Magic Tree House" books on tape.
From the ridiculous to the sublime...  ...The BBC recording of the "Lord of the Rings" actually kept the 5 year old riveted on a cross-country trip (and Mom, too!) And of course, "The Hobbit".
I found all the above tapes at Barnes & Nobles.

Oops, another recording I just remembered that has been a big hit in this household is (of all things) the "Wee Sing: Nursury Rhymes" cd. Not only do the children enjoy the singing, but it has really helped reinforce their memorization of Mother Goose Nursury Rhymes. Also the DK "Classic Ballet Stories" gets asked for repeatedly. Both of these cds are great for short sound-bytes, as are the Magic Tree House cds, Hank and the D'Aulaire myths I mentioned in the previous post.

Winnie the Pooh on tape (slightly abridged) is available through Chinaberry catalogue. There are other recordings out there, but the Chinaberry is our favorite.

We really like the Winnie the Pooh read by Walter Cronkite. His voice is so amazing. Also, Jim Weiss has a really nice Beatrix Potter Collection.
I'll have to ask my kids for more ideas.

How about the My Father's Dragon trilogy? It's great fun for 5 year olds, but I think your 3 and 2 year olds might like it, too. It's one of those that spans all ages--my 9yo still likes to revisit the stories!

Dear Kristine,
Your kids are little young for some of my recommendations but our absolute favorite for long trips is On To Oregon!by Honore Morrow. Whe you listen to the story of survival of seven children alone on the Oregon Trail, your comfy car ride, no matter how long, just doesn't seem so bad. This is one to keep in mind for later.
We've also really enjoyed The Chronicles of Narnia, produced by Focus on the Family's Radio Theater. Those might be ok for your chickies.
We've liked all of EB White on tape. And we've liked Little Lord Fauntleroy and The Secret Garden and The Little Princess.
Oh! And you can certainly begin the Little HOuse Series, newly released last year, read by Cherry Jones. I think Harper Audio did a fantastic job casting these and we have waited breathlessly for each new one to be recorded! My three-year-old was enraptured by these tapes last year and he really retained the story. We read the First Little HOuse picture books continually at home as well.

I think the first book on tape we heard was E. Nesbit's Five Children and It read by Johanna Ward.

I bought the Beatrix Potter story tape through Amazon, but we get most of our tapes from the library. I keep my booklists near the computer & check to see which ones are available on tape.

Another good EB White on tape is "Trumpet of the Swan". All my children enjoyed this one.
Also, another poetry-on-tape plug goes to the Ted Jacobs cd "A Child's Garden of Verse" by RLStevensen. This is a very nice recording of some of RLS' poems put to lovely music. I really like this cd!

We like anything read by Jim Weiss. My 4.5 ds liked the Boxcar Children and Winnie the Pooh. Does Christopher Plummer read Winnie the Pooh? I just know I cry every time they talk about Christopher Robin going to school. It gets me every time.
