I have a couple of questions about having a midwife - one general and one specific.
Firstly - how does it work with a midwife? Do you find a OB practice with a midwife - or do you select a midwife who is not connected with your practice? I am not a home birth candidate - but am interested in getting information about a midwife - though not sure how it would work with insurance.
Secondly - anyone in Northern Virginia who can recommend a practice with a midwife - please pm me? ( I am very happy with my Catholic ob-gyn - just interested in finding out more about a midwife - as I so want to work towards another VBAC with minimum intervention if possible)
Thanks!

I have a wonderful midwife who is also a personal friend. I know that she had a week's vacation scheduled around my due date and she wore a pager the whole time and never was more than fifteen minutes from the hospital. In the end when I was very overdue, the only day for an induction that would make sense with the backup docs and my dh's travel schedule was her day off. She never mentioned that in the scheduling. She just said, "See you at the Birthing Inn at 8 on Wednesday!" And there she was. She stayed the whole time. On her way to the car that afternoon, she ran into my kids, there to meet their sister. She took Katie by the hand and walked them all back inside. A half hour later, she walked out into the evening--no day off left.
More importantly, she prayed for me throughout my pregnancy and throughout labor and delivery. She was committed to a VBAC if it were safely possible. She stayed with me for my entire labor and delivery and came by the next day for a very long talk. As committed as she was to a VBAC, she was more committed to avoiding PPD.
Had a C-section been necessary, I knew that Dr. Foster, who typically backs the midwives had an excellent reputation. He's Molly Smith's doctor and she's had six great sections.
You can read abouthere.

Thanks Elizabeth for the info - Wow - so close too. I am not able to sit up any more - couch beckons. But I will look at in more detail. I would love to have a midwife as I have always wanted to have as natural a birth as possible. A friend sent me an article this weekend about how women's bodies were made to have babies and we need to learn to work with our bodies. But for most of my births I have been so afraid of pain and risks and never had the confidence that I could maybe handle it differently.
If it is okay with you - I will ask you some more questions once I look through everything and talk with Steve.

Elizabeth, I love those midwives so much! Wendy delivered 2 of my girls and Paula delivered by daughter born Sept. 29. I had some problems towards the end of pregnancy and they took such excellent care of me and Agnes.

Elizabeth - I am going to give the Midwife practice a call and just talk to them for now. Do I need to select one particular midwife? Please would you let me know which one is your friend. I am praying for guidance as to whether to make the switch - and am having some "guilt" at moving away from my Catholic OB.
Thanks for all the information.

Marilyn,
You don't select one--you see them all and they rotate just like a three person OB practice. Margie has delivered my babies, except for Katie. Wendy assisted at the section when she was born. No matter what, they are there for you throughout your birth.

Oh, Marilyn, hang in there.
I had a terrible experience with my hospital midwife. It sounds like Elizabeth had the type everyone longs for. My homebirth midwives were great.
Just wanted to say that not all midwives are great. They sometimes try to play doctor and that can be a very big problem. They have no business managing medical problems such as high blood pressure, etc.
Don't read me wrong, though. I think a great midwife would help for a great birth. They also provide a nurturing and reassurance that doctors do not.

Please say a prayer for me. I have to make a decision this week about whether to switch to the midwife practice. My husband is not too keen on the switch - but will support my decision. I have always supported my Catholic pro-life OB - and so feel a little disloyal - my main reason for switching is to have an involved midwife and to try for a drug free birth. I am just praying for guidance and peace in the matter.
I did make the decision not to take the nuchal test - after lots of prayer and AFTER I succeeded in getting my insurance to authorize it!
Hard to make decisions when the first trimester sickness is so bad!
