My dh went to the doctor this morning because of a broken toe, but that turns out to be the least of our worries. His blood pressure was so high that the doctor gave him medication on the spot. He has a full physical next Friday. His dad survived a heart attack at age 47 (dh is 39) and also has diabetes, so Rick is at risk for both. Adding to his genetic risks, he is overweight--roughly 50 lbs. Please pray that he is receptive to the dietary and exercise changes that he will need to make in order to lead a long, healthy life! (By the way, we'll all make the changes, of course, but the rest of us eat pretty healthily anyway!)
I need to scour the web and recipe books to try to find heart-healthy recipes for my non-anything-that-grows-from-the-ground eating husband. I would greatly appreciate any recipes that fit this bill--heart healthy, diabetic friendly, no veggies--does such a thing even exist?

Molly
I will definitely keep your husband in my prayers.
Have you read the Carb-Addicts Diet book? One of the doctors who wrote it was morbidly obese and had very high bp and cholesterol as well as an assortment of other conditions. She came across this "diet" almost by accident, but it changed her life. She lost the weight and her body was able to normalize again, the bp and cholesterol went down significantly and quickly.
It is not as rigorous as Atkins, so it might be easier for your husband. You might want to look into it.

Thank God for a broken toe to discover the bp now. God is good.
Will pray dietary changes are welcomed and work.

Thanks, Molly, I'll definitely look for this one.
Right now he seems to be in denial and thinks his diet is fine. He just doesn't see it. His mom freaked out (she's a nurse practitioner) at his BP. She said it was "stroke-high". Lovely. If that doesn't wake you up, what will?? I'm more than a little frustrated at the moment because he is not taking this as seriously as I am! Hopefully his doctor will knock some sense into his stubborn brain (said in love, of course) at his physical next week.
I am thankful for the broken toe, though, God sure does work in mysterious ways. And I'm very thankful for all your prayers.

This happened to my dad almost 2 years ago when they discovered his diabetes. (He already had high bp and serious liver and circulation problems. He's about 90 pounds overweight.) He had many many people praying for him, and he DID start watching his diet after the initial shock. We're praying for Rick!

Molly,
I will pray that your husband will decide to change his ways. Cooking from scratch will be your best bet in improving his diet... it's easier to avoid the hidden trans fats and other "no-no's". And there are ways to sneak veggies into foods, I have a meat loaf recipe that's FULL of veggies that my family loves. But in the end, it will be your dh who decides what he will and won't eat. I hope that he will hear your concern for him and listen to you and his doctor.

Dear Molly,
Kevin had a heart attack at age 39 during my last pregnancy. We naturally made all the diet changes, he lost weight and exercised like crazy. His numbers still weren't good. It is genetic. His dad died in his 50's from a heart attack and both his older brothers have had heart problems.
The good news is that the medications have made a huge difference. He has put some of the weight back on but the meds have kept his numbers in a good range.
So, hopefully, if Rick is still resisting life style changes, he will at least be willing to take the meds. Thanks be to God for modern medicine. My impression is that it is hard to overcome the genetic factor without meds.
Please keep us updated and please, please PM me if you want to talk about this some more. It is a huge issue to live with and I wish I had had another wife my age to talk some of this over with.

Thank you all so much for your prayers. Rick got a clean bill of health at his physical! Praise God! The appointment went exactly as I'd prayed it would--he doesn't have any red flags, but the doctor told him he must lose weight, especially since there are heart attack and diabetes in his family. He will go back in August for a followup on the bloodwork and appt with the doc, so now he has someone to be accountable to for his dietary and exercise regime.
Thank you all, again, for your prayers!!

Praise the Lord!
Thanks for the update. Will pray Rick begins the dietary and exercise regime. If he does, let us know what/how. My dh is interested but never seems able to either find time or stick with it...

I've been meaning to get back to this to report that dh has lost almost 20 pounds already! Because of the broken toe he hasn't formally exercised, but we have a huge yard and he works out there a lot. He cut out all the junk he'd been eating and started eating smaller portions. I've been cooking exclusively from the Cooking Light website (I only choose the 5 star recipes and I've only had one dud) and Rick has eaten more vegetables in the last 3 weeks than in his almost 40 years combined. And guess what? He likes it! The Cooking Light recipes are so good. I'm thrilled because I'm eating real vegetables--I used to just steam some frozen veggies. Oh, and I haven't lost even a fraction of a pound . And the reason I know I haven't lost a fraction of a pound is because dh bought a fancy scale that weighs you to the tenth of a pound and I'm officially stuck.

Molly,
Congratulations to your husband! That is great. I bet he feels so much better.
I think I will check out Cooking Light. Court and I could both stand to lost some weight. Do the kids like the food?
