Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My sons and I just finished this book (we listened to it on CD) and we really enjoyed it. I don't know if this book has been reviewed here. The LIBERATION OF GABRIEL KING by K. L. Going is about what is brave and what is liberated and the opposite of both. It takes place during the summer of 1976 -- it discusses racism and oppression in the most natural way -- not exaggerated or too scary for young listeners. My boys are 9 and almost 6 and they both requested that I turn it on when we were riding around in the van. The recording put out by the publisher is very well done and I believe won awards and rightly so.

In the book the kids make lists of what they are afraid of and spend the summer 'liberating' themselves of their fears. The main character is Gabriel King who is afraid to go to the 5th grade because he is afraid of the 6th grade bullies and would rather stay behind in 4th grade then face them. His friend Frita Wilson is going to help him conquer his fears. The book is funny and tender without being sappy. The ending is wonderful and the characters are endearing. (Yes, I really liked the book).
I think it would make a good read-aloud during the summer months (same season as in the book) or during the month of February (black history -- although I think this should be done more often then one month a year). But mostly, anyone who has a child who is afraid of things and needs some 'liberating'!

I hope this helps anyone needing a good read aloud.
