Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've never received instruction on asking for something to be blessed.

My children finished their Our Lady of Guadalupe ornaments and would like to take them to Mass this morning to be blessed by Father.

What's the right way to do this (actually WHEN)...before Mass or wait until after? Do we just walk up to him & ask if he'd bless them? Please tell me it isn't out of line to to this.

Thanks for your help!

Michaela -

You've got it! After Mass, or any time really that is not interrupting something else, walk up to Father. You might say your children made these and would like to ask him to bless them. Simple. Priests expect this sort of request, so he won't look at you oddly or try to talk you out of it or anything. You can also ask for a blessing for yourself, your husband, any of your children, etc., especially if you are about to travel, are starting something new, have some special event coming up. Ask him bless you and your new baby close to when you expect to deliver. We have had the priest bless our family when we are about to start the new school year.

How lovely to have your Our Lady of Guadalupe ornaments blessed!

Peace,
Nancy

Michaela, Exactly as you said! I really think we don't take advantage of a priestly blessing nearly enough. Our family is always requesting this for something!

Thank you so much. Now I can ask with confidence instead of worrying I'm doing something wrong.

I think you're right. I've never seen anyone receive a blessing or had a special item blessed.

I learn by observing, but this is something I've never witnessed.

Marianna ran up to the priest today to ask that a new rosary be blessed. He asked for her name and used it in the blessing as well. Father held it between his hands and very simply asked that it and she be blessed.

I thought it neat that we came home and you had asked this question while we were at Mass!

Before my son deployed to Iraq, I had a St Michael's medal blessed for him. The wonderful priest took a good 10 minutes, blessing it and calling on so many saints for his protection. It was very comforting for me.

My Leah brought her Soft Saint dolls, St Anne and Our Lady of Guadalupe to church to be blessed and our priest was happy to do it.

I am eager to have something blessed by my pastor (especially after making ourselves very well known to him ) - what kinds of things are appropriate for blessing? My sons made sacrifice beads a few months back - and would it be all right for us to bring their plastic rosaries?

We always have our rosaries, crucifixes, medals, and statues blessed when we get a new one. Dh often asks for a blessing on the car before a long road trip. Our wonderful priest is always happy to oblige!

My understanding is that all religious articles and crafts are
appropriate for blessing, and our experience has been that priests are always glad to be asked.

We have had other things blessed that you might not expect, like our pool and swingset! I like to think that the entire pool is full of holy water now! : )

As for a good moment, any chance you have to speak to the priest is fine. My girls ran over to our pastor to have their handmade rosaries blessed immediately after Mass on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and it worked out well.
