Looking at the Fontanini Easter pieces, specifically the hill with a crucifix and two crosses, about $100, I'm thinking, surely such a piece could be made and reused every year. How could I make such a thing? Salt dough? Some other stuff?

My thought it to look at the styles and techniques that model railroad builders use to make their hills. They always look pretty realistic and aren't as heavy as a solid hill of salt/flour dough would be. (I would worry that it would crack, also.)

Here are a couple links with pictures. No matter what you used as the base, I think the fake ground covers and foliage that they use for model railroading would look really nice to make something like the Fontanini.

Perhaps papier mache? You could do the basic form with foam, foil, cardboard, etc, then cover it with papier mache to get details. The you could paint it and add the moss, etc.
