I took my oldest, Bernadette (8) to the pediatrician on Tues b/c she has been walking sort of stiff/limp for a month off & on. The dr thought she was fine but since we were there she wanted to xray her leg. Well...her leg is broken She sent us to the orthopedic dr yesterday & he confirmed that she did fracture her tibia, just below the knee. He said this is very unusual that we would have a fracture & not remember an injury, or even that she has been running aroung playing on it for a month. He said it is about 75% healed so no cast, splint or even crutches. He will re-xray in 4 weeks.
I am feeling like such a bad mother We just thought she may have strained or pulled something. She would mention it hurt sometimes, then she would go play; bike riding, running, skipping, dancing...We even went to the zoo for 3 hours last week...Good Grief!!!
I don't want the dr's to think I'm a neglectful mother

Look, the Dr. even thought she was "fine." Obviously it was never so bad that it is something you would have suspected - and when it wasn't getting better it was checked out. Please don't beat yourself up - I've heard multiple stories like this - it does happen. You are a caring mother and I'll pray for peace for you that you can let self-doubt go.

I agree with everything Mary wrote.
Joining in prayer that you stop being so hard on yourself and left the self-doubt go.

Please don't feel bad. I don't think anyone would have thought her leg could be broken if she was still that active. As you said, even the family doctor thought she was fine before the x-ray.
Bernadette must have a high pain threshold. She may have fallen off her bike or something and not even said anything at the time.
I doubt they think you are neglectful. If she had been unable to walk and was crying for days without improvement and you didn't take her in, then they might think you were neglectful.
Hope you are both feeling better soon.
Blessings,
Krisann

Don't beat yourself up too bad. These things do happen...
I'll keep your dd (and you) in my prayers for recovery and peace.
My sister went through this same guilt/self-doubt this summer. My nephew (15 y/o) had been complaining of a sore neck and being tired, pretty much all summer. They replaced his mattress, and did a bunch of other things, attributing it to growing pains. Turns out he had Lyme disease! Yikes, my poor sister was upset, and she's a nurse!

Jenny, these situations and the feelings that go along with them are so difficult. If I was in your shoes, and I HAVE been in similar shoes, my husband would say, "Angie, you are a great mother. We can't control everything. It's OK." So...
Jenny, you are a great mother. You can't control everything. It's OK .
Love,

Jenny-
I've had a kids with a tooth abcess for days that I thought was nothing and turned out needing to come out VERY quickly once I saw it was black .
He complained every evening only and it was right at bedtime and I thought it was no big deal so I tucked him in and never thought of it again. Until. . .it was serious.
These things happen. Doctors overreact! Kids are tricky.
Don't worry.
Praying. . .

I just wanted to say that my sister's name is Bernadette. I LOVE that you named your daughter that strong and gentle name. How extraordinary.

Jenny,
When my oldest ds (now 18) was 1, he broke his arm. I was concerned at first, but after looking at it, and even calling the dr. and describing it to the nurse, we all thought he was ok. A WEEK later, my dh gently squeezed the area, because he was not convinced all was well, and, as you can guess, my ds winced and cried. Turns out it was a fracture. He had a cast for a few weeks.
My next ds (16) has a very high pain threshold, and even played basketball with a tib fracture!
And to add to that, the only time my parents didn't take me to the er for a questionable injury, it was the ONE time that I had a fracture!
Glad to hear her leg is healing well!
God Bless,
