Hello
I hope I won't offend by asking a slightly probing question.
For those of you who are open to life all the time -- as opposed to using NFP -- do you act as if you might be pregnant for about 50% of the time? What I mean is, do you do all the dietary and lifestyle stuff, and take folic acid, just in case?
Just a theoretical question at the moment, but I hope it won't always be so...

I do. For instance, I won't take ibruprofen or have a glass of wine in the second part of my cycle.

I do exactly as Bridget said. I always eat well, and I always take my supplements. During my monthly and for about a week or so after I may indulge with a drink once in awhile or take a Motrin if I need to. After that I act as though I may be pregnant. (that's where I am right now actually! )

Yep, me too. And if I'm nursing and not yet into predictable cycles, I pretty much act like I'm pregnant because that's happened before!

I do since my third child. As I've mentioned before the tests were negative with him. One of my college friends visited during the early stages of my unknown pregnancy and gave me a bottle of chocolate liquer (I usually stay away from alcohol ~ I don't like the taste of it). I should have known something was going on because I craved the gift on vanilla ice cream and had this dessert occasionally (completely out of the ordinary for me). I was really worried once I found out that I was pregnant. I shouldn't have even had it in the first place, as my second child was still nursing. Since I am usually pregnant and/or nursing, I would rather play it safe.

Same here...I do not take supplements and I have not been eating as well as I should but I don't drink alcohol or take any medications. If I have to go to the dr. I always tell them there is a chance I could be pg. I never figured out NFP (we took the class eons ago because my friend was teaching it..but we had no intention of using it plus I was nursing at the time and my cycle had not returned so I did not pay attention) so I just act as if I am pg all the time!

Yes, me too. I always take my prenatal vitamins and eat wisely (as possible ). I have been either pregnant or nursing (or both) for about 7 years now and found that if I always keep in mind that I may be pregnant, I don't worry much about what I've taken when I (praise God) find out I'm expecting again!

Yes.
It seems every dentist appt. takes place during the second half of my cycle. Twice in the last 3 yrs the dentist wanted x-rays done. I said I could come back in a couple of weeks if necessary-it wasn't urgent, and unfortunately it turned out that I also wasn't pregnant.

I think my dentist thinks it's my excuse not to have x-rays! He always looks at me kind of funny because I always have to say I might be pregnant! I learned just recently that I need to be even more careful though. We were visiting out of town for Thanksgiving and, as usual, my family had wine with dinner, so, as usual, I drank my one glass. Then the next night we all went to my brothers for pizza and we had wine again. I now have this sneaking suspicion that I should not have had any wine...

hmm, I wouldn't say I act as though I might be pregnant..
more along the lines of simply trying to stay healthy in general for whatever life might toss my way.
I never ever have more than 2 glasses of wine, and rarely more than one occassional glass with dinner - which will not hurt a baby during pregnancy or when nursing.
xrays - those are dangerous, imho, so I will try to do those soon after baby is born (around 2 or 3 months) and before my cycles return if possible. As matter of fact, I try to schedule dental appts. while pregnant for after the baby is born.

I am glad to read this Martha. I am not a drinker of alcohol in general. I could go months and months without having so much as a glass of wine. But I do occasionally have wine at extended family dinners, etc. I have never worried about my very limited wine drinking, either while pregnant or nursing. I heard an ob/gyn say that he has no problem with occasional wine during pregnancy.
I find it rather ironic that many of the same liberal people who have become health police and try to tell us that women should not have so much as a drop of wine while pregnant, also find it completely acceptable to abort babies.

I try to eat healthy on a regular basis and always take vitamins with folic acid in them. OK. It's confession time. Yesterday we were out most of the day. We went to Burger King (ugh! ) for lunch. I had 2/3 of my burger. I was unusually hungry. Then we went out for dinner because 4 of our kids had a piano recital right through the dinner hour to bedtime. So we went to Applebees. I tried to order smartly. I had steak and shrimp with mashed potatoes and broccoli. I ordered that and a side salad and my daughter didn't order anything so we split it all. I felt better about what I ate because I had half.
Also, it's difficult for me to eat healthy when there's so much (Halloween) candy lying around. I limit myself, as I do the kids, to two pieces a day. I don't have it every day, but when I do I always feel guilty.
I even save a Rubbermaid bucket or two of maternity clothes because there's not a whole lot of modest maternity clothes out there these days. Every so often I update it and can give away some of the things I don't use as often.
