I need someone like Chari nearby! I feel so stupid asking this question, but I don't have any experience. How do you know if you broke a bone, especially in the foot? Dave's ratchet set fell on top of my feet last night. One foot is fine, slightly bruised, the other is very painful, hard to put weight, move, touch. It's not very swollen, localized swelling and bruising on top of the foot.
My doctor's office said to come in for a diagnosis...so I guess I will, but maybe I could get some expert experience and maybe some links or books that would help me in my quandry. Of course, this is the day my sisters are coming over with their kids, and I can't tidy up.

No help here with a diagnosis, but I can empathize with you ! I pray it's not broken, and you have a quick recovery! Foot injuries can be troublesome.

My husband broke one of his toes last spring. It sounds a lot like what you are describing. An x-ray confirmed that his toe was broken. However, here is the clincher, nothing could be done for it. He had to let it heal naturally (I do not remember whether this was due to the amount of time that had lapsed or because of the location of the break). He did get pain killers, but he didn't use them (his theory ~ if he couldn't feel the pain, he might reinjure his toe). Months later, I still hear an occasional, "Ow", from him when he touches his toe on something or a child steps on it.
Edited to add: I will keep you in my prayers. I hope your toe is not broken.

I can't help you either, Jenn, but will say prayers.
I'm so sorry you hurt your feet.

Jenn, praying for your healing and comfort! I broke a toe last spring - oh, my did it hurt! Swelled up, deep purple - and yes, as Christine said, nothing could be done for it. I just had to keep it still (right) and keep off it as much as I could (ha!). I couldn't wear a shoe on that foot for awhile nor move that toe at all. Now it is fine, but still tender if I catch it on something. My mum says it will become my "weather toe" before too long.
Hope you're feeling better soon!

Waiting to hear results from the xrays. It's not my toe, it's the foot. It's been a long day, and lots of immobility. I had to get crutches and waiting to see if I'll need a boot or something. Seems everywhere I went they didn't have my size.

Being your sisters do you really need to bother, they'll still love you Now if it was me coming over.... you wouldn't need to bother either.
Do pray your alright it sounds very painful.

Ouch! Poor thing! We are praying. Keep us updated. I don't have any advice. As my thyroid specialist always tells me, "you have good bones, nothing else but good bones."

Jenn,
I've broken a metatarsel (Sp?) twice and my little toe. The toe was by far the worse, since as someone else said, they can't do anything for it; just tape it to the other toe. Once you find a boot to fit (and I'll pray for that today), you will love it. It takes absolutely all the pressure off the bone; I didn't want to take mine off after 6 weeks!
As far as your question goes, swelling is the best indication I know of of a broken bone...I fell down the steps once and had terrible pain in my ankle once but no swelling and in a couple of days it was fine. Even the stress fracture of the metatarsel produced some swelling on top of my foot.

I wasn't talking major tidy-up, but I had some things that needed to be taken down to the basement (actually that is what preceded the accident) and they were still sitting in the kitchen. But I got my sisters to help and things were fine.
Thanks for all the good wishes and the helpful advice. It is not broken, but the doctor said it was badly inflamed...didn't know a bone could be inflamed, but it is. The joint/bone below the big toe is the hardest hit. The doctor said it might take a few weeks before it completely heals and to take it easy. So for the next few days no driving, and I'm thanking God for a lap top. Perfect timing to pull together the Advent Fair since I can't do much else. I can hobble around somewhat, but it's not easy.
