Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Have any of you read, Fundamentals of Homeschooling by Ann Lahrson-Fisher?

Leonie's mentioned it a few times on various posts and I finally got a copy from the library....what a wonderful book! It's all about living and learning and not worrying about filling in workbooks and lots of wonderful tips and hints. She's got great resource listings at the end of each chapter and the end of the book.

She tends toward the unschooling, but in a measured way that explains how much kids can do on their own but with guidance. She's not a "hard-core" unschooler (at least the book didn't give me that impression) but she has many great insights on the way children -- all children -- learn and how silly to even think of putting them in school!

I am so glad you like the book, Mary. I love the chapters on schedules and time management, on planning, on games with multi age children and on "joyful disruptions."

Definitely not for hard core unschoolers - the author beleives in some have tos and in limiting TV and computer games.

A useful book I tap into now and then...

Leonie -- what really sold me on this one was the insistence on playing with your kids (and allowing them to "play") and how much they can really learn by that ... and conversations with mom and dad and each other too!

Thanks again -- your recommendations have so far proved infallible for me!

I just ordered it from my interlibrary loan system. Thanks for the tip! I am always on the lookout for a good book.

Just picked this up at the library today (based on your suggestion). It looks great!

Thanks for the recommendation.

Peace,
Nancy
