Hi all-

I have a son whose strength is in concepts and creativity but gets very hung up on calculations and memorizing mundane things (such as mult. tables)

He is 14.. so I have kept moving ahead letting him use a chart so we don't get stuck.

Now that we are working on formulas.... I gave him a calculator and he is zooming! I think he enjoys it, as he can see the concept and solve the problem without getting bogged down in the details.

I still want to help him work on this skill (I feel most people will have access to calculators.. but still need to know the operations in case they are in a situation with none around)

Any experience with this or thoughts? It is fun to see him enjoy the concepts- that is the fun part of math.

I was an Accounting major in college, and we relied heavily on calculators for every day. Oftentimes, we needed to do math that was not so much difficult as it was tedious and time-consuming (huge columns of addition, for example). The calculators helped us to move through material quickly and doublecheck our answers before moving on. The important thing was that we understood the accounting concepts, and all the professors expected and encouraged us to use calculators.

Still, every once in a while, a professor would give a test and tell us to leave our calculators outside, and there were no calculators allowed on the CPA exam. Some students had a real problem with this and trouble finishing on time.

I suppose I would say that calculators for everyday are a good (and maybe even necessary) thing, but it makes sense to practice without now and then in case the need arises.
