Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For some reason, maybe its end of the year blues, but I've been feeling a real need to revamp our direction next year. I have a broad outline of where I want to go its the 'how' I am now working on.

In regards to dd13 I know I want her to be immersed in high quality literature next year, fortunately this will not be a problem for her. This indeed will be the main thrust for her education. My question is where to go from there. How much written work to I require from her readings? How do I go about selecting what books I would like her to read? Or rather I should say how do I go about directing her selections? What are good book lists out there? Is it feasible for her to attain a great education by reading and reading alone without requiring any writing?

Could I get away with say maths and reading? Oh and of course she wants to include hands on activities Not my strength, I don't even know where to start there.

Erin,

Focusing on great literature is an excellent way to pursue excellence in education.

I do think that writing goes hand in hand with reading as part of a great education. Learning how to express oneself in writing is an enormously helpful skill in life.

That said, how you go about the writing could be open for discussion between you and your daughter. Do you want her to be able to narrate plots? Do critical analysis? Share impressions and recommendations? Articulate why a particular book is a great book?

Journals, blogs, narrations, formal reports? A lot depends on what kind of writer she already is, and what areas you want to work on.

Just some opening thoughts ....
