Hey y'all,
I'm not a girly-girl at all -- never played with dolls or read any books about dolls, so I really need some advice from y'all:
I would love to get my 6yod a doll house from Santa -- one of those 2/3 story ones where you do the furniture and paint, etc. I think it would be fun for us to do this together.... but I have no idea about any of these and would like some advice.
Also, I'd like to get her some doll books -- she hasTudor's Doll's Christmas and Godden's Holly and Ivy ... any other suggestions?

Oh, Mary! We just did this for our dd. In fact, dh is upstairs right now working on the dollhouse. I looked all over the web and most of the completed dollhouses I looked at were too complete (leaving no room for dd's creativity) or too expensive. We finally bought a kit. I used this kit. I must admit, dh about had a cow when we opened the box and all it was was pieces of wood that he had to assemble. My dh is very handy but I think was a little overwhelmed. However, he really has enjoyed putting it together. It is not something that can be put together on Christmas eve for the next day. The kit instructions say it takes about 30 hours. This particular house is really detailed. There are two fireplaces and built in bookshelves and a staircase. Dh assembled all of those things and installed them after building the frame. It also has wood siding to be attached and individual shingles. My dh works on it a little each night. He started in the middle of October and will probably be done by Thanksgiving. When he's done, it'll be ready to paint, paper or whatever. My dd is so exicted! If you need anymore details about it, let me know. Good luck and have fun!

One more thing, Mary. The Dollhouses Galorewebsite has great info about finding the right kind of house. It explains the different scale or size dollhouse. Check it out and it may help you figure out what would work best for your dd.

The Magical Dollhouse has a lot of dollhouse kits and they guarantee the lowest price. My daughter really wanted the Willow (recommended by Courtney), but after reading the review I think I need to find something that is ready to go (my time is very limited at the moment). I found that Melissa and Doug have a Victorian Dollhouse, but the price is holding me back from making a purchase.

Here is an old thread with many book recommendations including some "doll themed" ones.

My dh finished the willow dollhouse! It looks beautiful! If you want to see pictures, just pm me and I'll send you an ofoto invite to see them. I tried to post a link earlier, but ended up posting a link that showed all my ofoto albums!
My dd is so excited! I think she will really treasure the dollhouse forever since her daddy made it for her. He spent a little time each night and weekend for about 1 1/2 months. He really enjoyed it, too!
