We found this fruit-like thing at the monastery today. Anyone know what it might be?

Hi Krisann! We call them hedge apples here in Kansas. My kids dissect them all the time! They are supposed to be helpful if you have spiders in your house. They are VERY sticky too!

This brings back memories! My mom used to make dried flower arrangements out of osage oranges back in the 1970s. She would slice them and dry the slices and put them on wires in an arrangement along with other dried flowers. I remember us stopping by the side of the road to collect them from the ground below the trees when we found them in our travels.

We call them Monkey Brains....no idea why!!! They make a lovely tiered fall decoration, and then we put them in the basement and attic to repel spiders. My girls collect them up and sell them with other foliage at our annual Medival festival!!

Thanks for all the helpful information! You gals are great.  
I am wondering if the nuns originally had them planted as a hedge around the monastery in the 1950's when they first moved here? Apparently they used to be grown and trimmed to provide a fence for farms and ranches. They are really tall trees now growing all along the drive.
The articles say they are supposed to attract squirrels but I didn't see any near the monastery, however, I have lots of them around my house - where there are none of these trees.  I live just over a mile from the monastery. Hmmm, maybe the squirrels around here don't like them.
The articles also say they are related to mulberry, which is something to which I am allergic, so I guess I will have to leave them alone. One article had a picture of some dried slices made into an arrangement that was quite pretty.
I thought the article about them warding off spiders by picking up an "orange" and hitting the spider was pretty funny.
Anyway, thanks for sharing your vast knowledge with us. We appreciate it.
