Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm happy to report that things are going a bit better with my own teen, and I'd like to thank you all for your prayers and encouragement.

Dh and I have come to the (tentative) conclusion that it is best to intervene as little as possible, and encourage the good from a safe distance, engaging the conversation when it seems right. I only second-guess myself when I suspect there is something ominous going on in secret. Then I wonder if I should be more assertive. But she is almost 17, and she doesn't need any micro-managing at this point. That would be counter-productive in the extreme.
I think teens need to know is that their parents are behind them for the long haul, that there is a safety net for them, and unconditional love. This will give them the confidence to step into the stream of life and (hopefully) choose the good. But they're allowed to trip along the way.

That said, I'm wondering if any of you have any experience with, or know anyone who might know something about, more natural remedies for teens with obsessive-compulsive disorder. This time, it's not my dd

A friend's 15 yo son has been struggling for some time, but it wasn't until this summer that he began the classic hand-washing ritual. THEN they knew what was wrong, and took him in for treatment. They put him on medication immediately, but this made him suicidal and they have had to hospitalize him twice. You can imagine how hard this is for them - and he is such a soft-hearted kid. It is pitiful to watch.

I won't bog this down with details, but I'm always amazed at the network of resources available through this list, so this is the place I turn to start looking.

I'd appreciate any info or even a direction.

(As a side, this family does not have Internet, so I'm doing the research for them. And this forum is the easy way to research )

Cod liver oil is reputed to help keep teens hormones in balance and help with impulsive anger issues. I am so sorry that i cannot think where I read this.

I am reading two books right now (one is never enough! ) on the link between mental health and our diets, especially sugar. One book is called The Depression-Free Diet and is sold by CCL. The other one is Potatoes, Not Prozac. I found that one at the library. Both books go through various symptoms and link them to excesses or deficits of various brain chemicals and our sugar sensitivities.

Might be worth checking out. I hope to finish either one or both before my children are all grown.

KathrynTherese, My twin nephews were diagnosed with OCD - one VERY mild and one pretty bad. It has been a long, hard road and drugs definitely were not the answer! They are still dealing with things but both are doing pretty well. My sister in law would be an wealth of info. and a good resource - she's been through it all! I don't think she would mind being in contact with you or the family. Please email me privately and I will pass on her info to you.

Hello All,

My oldest ds suffers from OCD. He is 13. Any information anyone would feel comfortable sharing here in this thread would be most helpful, because at times it has driven me to despair. We have been through he counseling route (our pediatrician is very conservative with regards to using meds in this age group).

God bless,

Tea

Tea,
I have been doing my own research and have come across some websites that explain the brain chemistry and offer some interesting solutions. I have passed these on to my friend, but she is too nervous at the moment to try to do anything beyond the meds from the psychiatrist. But maybe you are in a better position to learn and try some of these suggestions for your ds. If you do, I would be interested to know whether you see any results.

I am trying some of these with my dc - they are not ocd, but have definite ADD symptoms (as I once did, but now I do not, which leads me to believe that this is VERY MUCH a nutritional issue - I was once EXTRMELY unhealthy, and now I am well. And can think.) and some tendencies toward negative thoughts.

Synaptol

ocd alternative treatment

Consumer Health

Vaxa - ADD alternatives

I have tried this in the past, but not consistently enough to know if it worked:
Source Naturals

Now I bought this one, and am cutting them in half, along with 50 mg 5-htp and fish oils, and Cal-Mag:
Also Source Naturals

I found this stuff very interesting too:
Amoryn

Now you know everything that I know!
