Just wanted to share the exciting life of our screech owl box. Tim built it a couple of years ago and nailed it 15' up in a tree (close to the house so that we could observe from inside), hoping that someday a screech owl would find it. Titmice discovered it first and nested there. Then last spring a screech owl and mate found it and nested, but for some reason their single egg never hatched. We were hoping that they'd return this spring for another try, but in the winter a squirrel decided to call the box "home." After the squirrel moved out, titmice once again began investigating, but didn't nest. Our adored box's final residents were bees -- a colony took over and week or two ago. Since there is danger in our area of africanized bees, we couldn't keep them, though we enjoyed observing them through the telescope. Last night another homeschooling family came over to remove the bees for us. There were so many bees crammed in the box that they bulged out the opening. (I'm sure that half the box was probably full of leaves left by the squirrel!) The grandpa of the family (a beekeeper for over 30 years) spritzed the bees with water, trying to force them further in. He screwed a small board over the opening to the box and then pryed the box from the tree and passed it 15' down to a waiting grandson. It was very exciting to watch! This family hopes to raise the bees themselves, and we hope to get updates and visit from time to time. I've requested a bunch of "bee books" from our library. I'm so excited about our little rabbit trail!
