Hi! I'm hoping someone can help me muddle through the overwhelming resources that are out there for history timelines. What I'm trying to do is to use BF History guide to go through American History in a more orderly way. I would really like to make a timeline or a buy a premade one and maybe do a book of centuries. There are so many resources out there!!!! Which ones do you like? My children are in 1st. and 3rd grade.
I've seen these notebooks already set up to fill in as a book of centuries, but I don't remember where I saw them online! Help!!! Can somebody compare and contrast what's out there or what you like? I would be sooo grateful!

LOL....maybe the 3rd time's the charm
I can't help with the type of timeline you're looking for because we made our own and use lots of homemade and printed drawings, pictures, narrations, etc. But I have the Heroes of Virtue: A Timeline-Manual of New World Saints and Blesseds by Sister Elizabeth Ann. It' published by Catholic Heritage Curricula.
It has a very extensive timeline but it's not limited to the United States or even North America. It is geared toward South, Central and North America and has some world events thrown in which I like because it just helps all of us tie everything together. There are 52 pages of saints and blesseds and then some puzzles and worksheets.
Come....Holy Spirit!!

We don't have a timeline either -- just a book of centuries that we are creating on our own as we go (3 ring binder w/ page protectors). On some of our book of centuries pages we do have a timeline going across the top of the page (similar to Kingfisher's or Usborne's History of the World Books). Someday I hope to place a timeline across all of the book of centuries pages.

Hey AnaB,
If you check out the subject heading "Binders" in the "Blowing the Dust off History" forum, you'll find even more good discussion about Binders/Notebooks/Timelines/BOOK OF CENTURIES. Chari, the moderator, has a nice article that has a whole section on this topic. There really ARE so many great ideas and resources out there that it is hard to chose the right road.
Re: the timeline question. If you're feeling overwhelmed with the idea of a timeline (or wondering where on earth you'll put the darn thing to cover ALL of history...the whole side of the house?[LOL) you might consider doing a *little* timeline that only covers the era you are studying. It's much more do-able this way. Sort of like how to eat an elephant: one bite at a time! An easy method is to put up a piece of string along your wall and hang the timeline cards up with paper clips on the back of the cards. This way you can slide the cards around and move them easily when you put up a new card.
Have fun! Kelly in FL

oh, Kelly, that string thing is very clever. We are doing the middle ages next year.......I just might do that. Thanks for the idea
you also reminded me of the days when my older kids were younger...........we would make murals about whatever we were studying..........it was excellent fun. My poor younger kids have never experienced the fun
very sleepy , with yet another snow level warning.....yikes! where is my warm weather???!! oh, yesterday? that was it? just one day??? night!
oh, ps..........I am not the moderator over there, Kelly.....but it IS a great thread to read.......and you beat me to the recommendation!!

I just wanted to thank all of you ladies who offered great ideas. I also wanted to let you know what we came up with! I found at Office Max, these albums that bind in a way that the paper is laying Landscape-wise. The pages are in sheet protectors. So when the book is open, you have an 8.5x 22 spread. I bought some older looking parchment paper that I'm going to draw and copy a segmented line going down the center. I bought History through the Ages with their timeline figures. We'll put these above and below the line. This was not very expensive, but it's very nice. Also, if they mess up, we can just replace the page. I'm so excited to get the children started on it!! Thanks for your help!

At what age do you start these notebooks? I am just curious b/c they seem like a wonderful resource and teaching tool. I loved making timelines in school.
Thanks!

One way we did a timeline was to get 8 1/2 by 11 poster boards. We drew a timeline on the backside for BC and the front side for AD. As you can tell, I'm a detail freak and I wanted enough space to add in everything we read without taking over the whole house. We broke the time down into small segments so there would be lots of space for every year. Then we taped the poster boards together fan fold style. This way you can unfurl the whole darn thing when you want to see the whole picture. However, it stores neatly in any binder pocket or on a shelf and you can unfurl just the time period you are studying if you don't want to be overwhelmed.
A friend used a simple three ring binder notebook and her children wrote stories, poems, drew pictures whatever with the name/ event on top with dates. The advantage here is that it is easy to insert something new in the middle and there is more space to add explanations to events. Of course you could tuck the time-line into the pocket of this notebook and have both together.
The best part of homemade timelines is that you can keep adding to them and actually writing names and events in a sequence makes you think about them and helps them stick in memory better.

We started our notebooks as soon as we started studying history (around first grade, I guess). I really think that you can start at any age, because even young children can understand that X happened before or after Y, even if they don't understand the concepts of dates or large timespans. You can make it a sort of informal thing, just placing things in the proper order without going into a lot of discussion or detail.
