Hi all,
With my Christmas shopping now beginning, I was wondering if you could share some of your all time favorite board or family games. We love game night and have alot of the obvious ones, but I'd love to hear about the lesser known jewels that are out there! My girls are almost 13 and almost 8. Our current list of favorites would have to include Scrabble, Outburst, Trivial Pursuit, Careers, Wordsters, Clue, Animal Trivia, Battleship, Jenga, and Yahtzee.
Thanks!

Dutch Blitz is a fast-paced, unique card game (Christian Book Distributors sells it). If you have more than four players, you'll want a second set for twice the fun! Be sure to create a designated space, in the center of your table, for the piles of cards; the play can get fast and furious and it gets pretty difficult to keep track of individual players' cards and the central piles. We use a very large cutting board or a large serving tray. To distinguish between the two different sets of cards, for scoring purposes, we simply marked one set with a dot, using a permanent marker.
Phase 10 dice game is also a big hit around here. It's different from Yahtzee and much easier for younger children to play.
We've gotten two sets of Upwords from thrift stores. It's kind of like three dimensional Scrabble. We have yet to play the actual game, but it's great fun to use as manipulatives for Spelling and Language arts. Having two sets gives you many more letter choices. Your kids will love stacking or re-arranging letters to make goofy sentences. I tried leaving ours on a desk top, with inspirational quotes for my childrens' edification...they were absolutely tickled by the new opportunities for knee-slapping humor! I'm sure there's some kind of educational merit in their endeavors!!!

I know my kids love Settlers Games, but Settlers of Canaan, the bible-based version, is a real favorite. All the Settlers games are fun and challenging, and they have expansion sets available.

A favorite from last Thanksgiving -- that had ALL ages playing together -- was Cranium. This is a great, age-leveling type of game that all of us had a blast with!

I really love the Scrambled States of America. It's lots of fun, especially if you want to include the little ones.
