Anybody have a remedy for canker sores? My poor daughter (7) gets them sometimes and just cries. They are really quite painful for her but I have no idea what to do for them. I'd like something natural if possible, but I'm ready to do about anything to give her some relief.

I used to get them and even though it hurts the best remedy is to swish her mouth out with warm salt water. Have her rinse her mouth with it a few times a day and then it should heal it. I have also put some salt directly on them before. It burns at first but it will heal them fairly quickly. Hope this helps.

I'm a canker sore-prone person.

Several remedies:

stay away from orange juice (or anything with lots of vitamin c and/or acids for a while)
stay away from chocolate for a while
buy alum crystals and rub it gently on the canker sore itself.   yes, it hurts, but makes the canker sore heal VERY quickly. it's best if the alum is rubbed on it just when it's starting, as that would often prevent it from getting bigger. just FYI in case you're not familiar with alum, it does have a somewhat sour-salty-bitter-numbing taste to it, and kids don't like it the first time, but my 10-yo and 7-yo now use it without complaint. or grind the alum to a fine powder and sprinkle it on, OR dissolve in water and use as a rinse like the salt rinse mary suggests.
take L-lysine.

there are many more suggestions on the 'net but the ones i mention here work well for me and my family. hth.

I used to get canker sores a lot! About 2 years ago my dental hygentist told me to swish with Listerine once a day. Not Scope or any other type of mouthwash, just Listerine. That did the trick; haven't had a canker sore since. My husband had the same results. Also, my husband's dad is a dentist and before we stopped having our canker sore problems he would prescribe Kenalog which you apply directly to the sore and it lessens the pain and speeds the healing time. Hope this helps!

Cathy - Listerene is a great anteseptic. When my son bit through his lip he rinsed with it and it healed sooo fast...

As soon as you feel a canker sore coming on, supplement with Lysine. Stops 'em dead in their tracks.

Applying baking soda directly to the canker sore helps get rid of it (it doesn't taste the best).

My mom almost always used natural remedies with us with great success.

What is Lysine and where can I get it? Is it something that my dd and dh (both canker sore prone) could take on a regular basis to keep them from starting in the first place? It's it safe for kids? Thanks!

Bumping -- My 2 year old has a canker sore and cries all day because of it. Actually he says: "it stings" which was cute at first because he hardly talks, but isn't losing that effect on day 3 here.

So my questions to the rememdies above:

Is L-Lysine safe (it says on it do not take if under 18)?

And do you take it as a tablet? It's gi-normous for a two year old? Or crush it up in a drink?

Maryan - I'm not sure of the safety of Lysine for a child - I'm sure someone else will be able to answer that better than me.

I have a little guy here who gets these especially in times when he's been sick or stressed. What I've done is try to boost his immune response since that is in effect what Lysine does - it is an aid to a healthy immune system. I make sure to give the kids these L'il Critters Gummy Vitamins Immune Booster each day, especially my son who gets these. And, like others have mentioned, I avoid anything with acid while he has them. The immune booster seems to help cut the duration time, but I won't say that it has eliminated their occurence. HTH! I hate it when my little guy has these - makes meal time a real pain for him!

I was just reminded by my poor guy who's suffering from one right now that a straw is a help when drinking. Thought I'd mention that as well.

Poor kid! My ds 13 used to get them a lot, until I figured out that they were more frequent after he'd consumed a bunch of dairy (ice cream or milk). We started on raw milk about two years ago and now he only gets them when he's been to visit my mom and she's fed him a ton of ice cream. Cheese doesn't seem to bother him.
I read that canker sores are thought to be an auto-immune reaction. I think that homogenized milk caused this kind of reaction for my son. I don't think that dairy is necessarily the cause for everyone though.
Canker sores are so painful! Hope you find a suitable remedy.

Does anyone have anything to add to the advice above?

My nine year old is suffering terribly from 4 canker sores plus a very large sore on her tongue which we think is one as well. It's awful.

She agreed to rinse with warm water and baking soda, but was too afraid to do the salt or Lysterine. I have been putting Carmex on them all day - what do you think about that?

My dd still gets these on occasion, though not as frequently as she used to. When she does I give her Lysine right away and they do seem to go away more quickly. I think the trick that helps is to give the Lysine as soon as the sore starts. The pills are big but I have found that I can grind it up with two spoons into a powder and mix it with a little applesauce or something like that. I don't give it as a regular supplement, only when they have a canker sore. I also let her put orajel on the sore to numb it when it's really bothersome.

L-Lysine supplements. Just a daily pill can make a difference. It's an amino acid from meat that sometimes we lack in our dietary system...

When I had an episode of canker sores, I realized that the toothpaste I was using was causing them. I reverted to a more simple, without the bells and whistles toothpaste and haven't had a canker sore since.
