A friend lend me an article written several years back about the new findings about the adolescent brain. It was based on the book The Primal Teen

The Primal Teen

The article was pretty basic. It just mentioned some of the finding: the need for extra sleep, the inability to understand some abstract thinking, the pruning on conexions that are not being used. It all sounded interesting. Do any of you have read this book or another on the topic? Are these finding reliable? Sometimes I worry about the attitude of excusing behavior because "you are just wired that way" or "well it is your brain's fault after all it is devoloping"

Have these findings influence how teens are educated?

I have not read the book, but another book and many articles on brain development (in a seminar by my former school administrator). Fascinating stuff, really.
I think these findings are just being addressed in educational settings (at least the more progressive ones) and it will be interesting to see how they are integrated. The one thing that struck me as most interesting is the disparity of growth rates in different parts of the brain, with the logical, rational frontal lobes developing much more slowly (much later) than the centers for emotion. Explains why teens tend to be excessively emotional and often act on emotion before they think. In a sense, they are ruled by emotion. The frontal lobes actually do not fully develop until well into the 20's. I have seen some neat animations of MRI imaging on this I will try to dig up the links if I can.
I find it fascinating.

I saw a PBS special about this, maybe a year ago. It really is fascinating, and I do think its worth considering and accomodating, to a certain extent, at least.
