Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've vad the veins since I was a teenager...it's largely hereditary, but with each subsequent baby, there are more and they are more of a problem.

This pregnancy, there are waaay more of them, they stick out more and my legs ache terribly whenever I am standing.

My midwife recommends the support hose. I've never actually worn them, but I think I may just have to give them a go this time around. Anyone have any suggestions for good ones, where to get them? Also, any suggestions for natural coping strategies, and/ or supplements?

Kathleen

I was fitted for Ted's stockings and they did provide lots of relief.

I would recommend the stockings...my mil wishes she did earlier in life. She had a deep wound a few years back which was very painful and complicated her life immensely for a few weeks. Daily dr. appts, cleanings, medicines, stay off your feet..etc.

My Mom puts holy water on her legs!

God bless,

Mb

I had to wear the support hose after pregnancy from having a DVT & phlebitis. They made my legs feel SO much better!   I would recommend them....
After getting a Rx from the doctor (which was still expensive -- once I knew the sizes and fit I needed I bought them online here

I have worn those support hose ( by prescription) with every pregnancy. I even have to wear them occasionally when I am not pregnant. 2 days a month my legs just feel like lead and the support hose is such a relief. Yes, it is a pain to get them on and off, especially with a growing belly, but they are a big big help. I don't complain about them anymore. I am thankful that I have them.

I have worn hose for the last five pregnancies. I get mine without prescription from healthylegs.com and foryourlegs.com.

The most comfortable out there don't seem to come in maternity anymore, Bauerfiend. I do like Jobst alot. You have to measure your leg and figure out the compression you need. Sigvaris maternity hose didn't leave room for a growing belly. I found the thigh-high hose to be too itchy and they wouldn't stay up.

Get yourself two pair and alternate them. It is very worth it! They will easily last through your pregnancy and then some if you take care of them.

Hope that helps.

I was just reading in the current Wise Traditions magazine (a publication of the Weston A. Price Foundation) about treating varicose veins by Thomas Cowan, MD. I can send the particular article to anyone intersted. The point of the article was that varicose veins are caused by 2 situations:

"First, there is insufficient osmotic pressure generated in the cells, resulting in a weak upward flow. This is often caused by insufficient or poor quality fats in the diet, or the inability to metabolize these fats into water. Second, there can be a weak primary streaming force in the person, a situation that often gets worse as a person ages. In a sense, as we age our basic "vital" force gets weaker, the very force that "pushes" the blood up our veins and the sap up the trees. This can be the result of a myriad of causes, some of which must be addressed in a true therapy for varicose veins.
Two other issues must be addressed in a comprehensive therapy for varicose veins: the tendency to infections and a progressive weakening of the walls of the veins."

So basically, the treatment (according to the article) is:
1. to increse the osmotic push in the veins: ensure adequate good quality satuated fats in the diet - including but not limited to butter and coconout oil (the lauric acid in coconut oil has a benefit of an anti-microbial element as well)
2. to help with digestion of fats: fermented vegetables, particularly sauerkraut, and bone broth
3. green vegetables contain foods containing tannins and rutins which help nourish blood vessel walls
4. horse chestnut is an herb containing aesculin (a specific nutrient that strengthens blood vessel walls) - take Horse Chestnut comp from Mediherb 2 tablets 2 times per day for at least 1 year
5. Buckwheat greens iare rich in rutin - the best supplement is Standard Process product Cyruta Plus 2 tablets 3 times per day
6. strengthening the vital force is done by regular vigorous movement of the lower limbs (walking, yoga, rebounding, etc.)

I don't know if any of this helps, nor do I know about the use of these supplements when pregnant, but I read this article and remembered this thread, so I thought I might put the information out there.

Hope it helps!
Christine

Everyone...thanks so much for the recommendations. I have purchased a couple of pairs of Job hose and I feel like a new woman....well, atleast my legso do. I still have to get used the the feeling. I'm not very fond of them and they feel downright WIERD under pants. However, the wierd is worth the sacrifice with the amount of discomfort that has been alleviated.

Thanks again all!

Kathleen
