I really like her books and got the Discovering Great Artist for myself! Now I want to get more for my little two-year-old. Do you have any favourites? She has so many it's almost addictive. I was also looking at the Williamson Little Hands series. Any suggestions? My library has a limited supply.

Her early books were just being published when my oldest was a baby so I was really into those, particularly Mudworks and Scribble Art (which used to be called Scribble Cookies when I first found it). They have great activities for little ones and are especially helpful because of the recipes for lots of basic arts/crafts mediums (paint, doughs, etc). MathArts is good for hands on math for little ones. I am only recently becoming aware that she has so many other books published in the past 10 years. The one for littles that looks good is First Art. It's just so hard to keep track of all the "new" works out there.

The Williamson company has SO many books it's almost overwhelming to try to pick some favorites. I actually like the books that they have for older children better ("Kids Can!" series and "Kaleidoscope Kids!" series- though in a few of those you have to watch for the "politically correct" worldview).
Of the books in the Little Hands series (2-6 yr. olds) I particularly like Little Hands Nature Book.

I didn't even realize Kohl had so many books! (All I have is Discovering Great Artists.) Now I've got to get to the library to see what's available! I guess that this should teach me that when I find a book that I like, I should search for others by the same author...just in case. Thanks, ya'll!

Yes... there are THAT many books out there You can check it out here. Beware.... she has so many angles to the same subject, you almost feel as if you need them all.

Thanks for the input on this Genevieve. I was able to find a few of her books at my library today. I remember in college taking Teaching Art in the Elementary grades and using Mudworks for many projects.
Mudworks is my favorite so far so I am thrilled to be able to use some other resources by Mary Ann Kohl.

Not to belabor the fact that it's HOT, but Mary Chris and I are gathering supplies for art projects to do in the next week or so. The natives are getting restless indoors. I've just finished scraping play dough from my floor for the upmteenth time, but....does anyone have favorite, highly recommended projects to suggest from any of the Kohl books? We have a bunch of 'em .

Oh no! Not at all. Mary Chris' sons and my two little boys had a "snowball" fight in my sunroom with said play dough the other day. They're all perfectly entertained and keeping very active !

No Kohl recommendations, but I do have a play doh suggestion! Whenever we do playdoh now I cut down one side and the bottom of a big garbage bag, open it up and lay it on the floor. Anyone who wants to can play all they like. When they're finished they put away the plastic stuff and as much of the playdoh as they can, and I just wrap up the garbage bag with any leftover playdoh bits and toss it. Sounds like you may need to line the walls with it !
A friend of mine bought the kids a craft project we've been enjoying. I have no idea what it's called (Perler beads, I think? There's 1/2 and aisle at Michaels devoted to it so it's be easy enough to find), but it's little cylindrical beads of all colors (and glow in the dark) that you place on plastic forms, when you're finished you place the special paper on top, iron for 30 seconds, flip and iron the back side and voila!
My friend is the craft queen, and she buys whatever is on sale at A/C Moore. It's not always the greatest stuff, but it keeps kids busy on hot summer days, so...what's more important?

My kids love those fuse beads. One other thing I've been doing is saving boxes from cereals. The Mary Engelbreit Home Companion magazine had an article awhile back about making placemats out of old boxes. They were made to look like quilts. There are templates to use in the magazine also. It reminded me of something we could've done when we read Rag Coat. I'm hoping we'll get to those next week and then have them laminated to use at meal time.

I think it's in June/July. It's driving me crazy b/c now I can't find that issue! I know it's recent and it's not in Feb/mar or Apr/May. However, there is an article in the Feb/March about Eric Carle and his studio. I'll keep looking. If you have the June/July, let me know if you see the placemat article in there. Thanks!

I received a handful of free magazines at a garage sale a few weeks ago. This just happened to be in there. It is the June/July issue. The article is in the back where the paper doll page is.
