When did you start allowing your boys to go to the bathroom by themselves in public? My son is 8 and developmentally delayed. He is not 8 in maturity. I don't know if I can send him to the men's room by himself. He's always with me so when we go to the bathroom he goes too. I try to find family restrooms, but not all places have them. I worry about him being in the men's room, but I wonder if maybe I should let him go. I worry that he will not act responsibly and I also worry about other people (bad people).
Any thoughts?

My son is 8, and I still bring him into the bathroom with me. I think the danger still far outweighs any benefits. I've never had a problem with any comments on bringing him into the ladies room.

My oldest still come with me, although occasionally I have let them used the men's room. You can have him go in and see if anyone is in there first. Then if it's empty, let thim use it. I watch my watch (longer than 5 minutes and I'll go in) or talk to them from the doorway. That has helped me ease into it.

I don't let anyone go to the bathroom by themselves. I will occasionally send my 8 and 6 yo boys together, but they have very strict rules to wait with until they're both finished to leave the bathroom. I have sent my 4yo daughter in with my 10 yo daughter, but they have to go into the same stall and, obviously, stay together. In either case, though, I am usually right outside the door.
And I don't hesitate to bring the boys into the ladies room if I feel that's more appropriate. I think so many people understand. They're probably more upset about the crowd in the bathroom than the fact that there are a few boys in there!

I also let my ds 8 go in the men's room as long as there's no one in there. I tell him to come right out if it's not empty. If it's empty I let my ds 6 go with him. I wait outside too. Last night I was in a crowded place, so I took all of them into the ladies room. Some women were saying, "I don't blame you." and I hadn't even said one word to them about it.

Thank you to everyone. My view of what's normal tends to be a bit skewed because my son reaches some milestones so late. I need to trust my own instincts more.

I won't let my ds11 go by himself, I find a mother's room or use the handicap room. Once recently when we had neither I made him come into the ladies, he was very embarrassed but no way was I going to allow him to go on his own. I heard a dreadful story from the town next and will never allow him to go by himself.

The girls go with me and hubby goes with the boys. We allow them to go by themselves (girls together and boys together) if we are near the door and can monitor people going out.
This is why I *love* that more and more places have family restrooms. It seems not a lot of people use it -- it's almost always vacant. Which is a good thing IMO:D
