My twelve month old twins are going through that "I don't want to eat anything but cheerios" stage. They're not real big babies either, so a plunge down the growth chart would not be good.

What do you feed your young toddlers (i.e, between 11-16 months)? For breakfast? Lunch? Dinner? Snacks? I think I need some new ideas.

I can't wait to read other replies to this, I was thinking of posting the same thing!

Here are the *few* things that are hits here:

*cheerios (sometimes) but only in milk
*Barbara's Shredded Oats cereal (same with the milk)
*oatmeal

*avacado cut up
*baked potato cut up
*canned salmon (actually any kind of fish, fresh or canned)
*lunch meat diced up small
*homemade bread with Smart Balance Light (what we use for butter in our dairy allergic household )
*small bites of tender chicken - a rarity in our household because I tend to overbake everything

*cauliflower (both my picky kids LOVE this) steamed soft
*broccoli cooked until soft
*I admit it - french fries!

I've run out of time, but if I think of more, I'll repost.

Have you tried baked sweet potato fries? So yummy! Easy too, look in the frozen food section.

Our littlest just turned 2 and she was so small at that age and hardly eating a thing; just nursing a lot still mainly. She would eat Cottage cheese and peanut butter among a few other things.

Breakfast was super porridge from Super Babyfood by Ruth Yaron before I got lazy. Lots of bananas. Grated apple. In Hawaii, poi was popular. Gotta love purple food. And here's the one I'm a little embarrassed to admit: peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, crusts not trimmed, just plopped in front of them.

I have an 11 month old...and aside from nuts or other similar choking hazard, I give her whatever I am having or her big sister is having (who's only 2). Fruit cut up, cooked veggies, lunch meat in little bites, fish (she loves fish!), cooked beans, she LOVES rice of any kind (tonight I'm making tacos,etc and she'll have spanish rice, beans, taco meat, tortilla, avacado), scrambled eggs. The other day I made soup, and she ate that, just minus the broth. Oh, she and her sister LOVE cheese, I give them cheddar usually. Ummmm...wheat ritz crackers. In a month or two I'll probably let her eat peanut butter. Last night she had a grilled cheese.

My nursing almost 2 year old is a reluctant eater. Her favorite food however is meat. Bacon is her first love, then sausage. She'll eat bits of roast and chicken too.

Sometimes she'll eat Farina with a bit of brown sugar and a couple of chocolate chips hidden in there to make it appealing. The only draw back there is the clean up, farina is so grainy. She loves cheddar cheese, and she hates fruits and veggies. I was thinking of trying dried fruits.

I think they prefer it that way!

A young mom once asked me when I start my babies on milk. I told her usually when they find the toddlers sippy cup on the floor and drink milk from it. She was horrified, poor thing. I could see her making a mental note to herself not to ask my advice again.

My younger daughter was a total "carboholic" until a few months ago. She'd eat cheerios, crackers, rice, pasta, bread, and that was about it! Now at 18mos she's still picky (unlike my older daugher), but will eat some healthier things like cheese cubes, yogurt (Yo Baby brand), cereal with milk, some fruits, raisins, and some meats. She still refuses veggies and anything that does not look appetizing. I hope this changes soon!

Funny how your perspective changes from baby#1 to babies 2, 3, 4, etc. I would have been happy so long as it was TODAY's sippy cup! (and not yesterday's missing cup dug out from under the couch...EWWW!)

My 12mo loved, loved, loved her yogurt. She wouldn't touch anything with any texture other than smooth and creamy or crispy (like Cheerios). No chunks. She's still a little picky. And just so you don't think I'm a horrible mom, she did eat lots of food with nutrition, but her first "food" word was "tip"= chip.

My 2 year old dd (3 in Feb.) is a tough one still. She eats pb&j, cereal, cereal bars, yogurt, or ANY junk food (funny how they aren't particular on that one).
A quick story...
This past Lent, our sacrifice as a family was to eat whatever mom served on your plate for dinner - NO complaints, NO substitutes! This truly was a sacrifice for our dc and was meant as a way of breaking bad habits. Anyway, dd had just turned 2 and we thought that would be an OK sacrifice for her too - she had to learn sometime, right? Well, for 40 days, she just didn't eat dinner! I couldn't believe it. We thought it was a test of wills, but 40 days?! We gave up after Easter. And, in case you were wondering, she was none the worse for wear at any point. She just ate 2 meals a day and wasn't sick or anything..no evenening snack either...big breakfast though. Maybe someday she'll eat.

I know this wasn't helpful, suggestion-wise, but just to let you know you aren't alone.

My toddlers eat what we eat. I don't make seperate food for the younger ones than the older ones.
Actually, this is 80% true for the infants even, except I'll mash it up for them if neccessary.

I buy a large box of organic cereal, Mighty Bites from Kashi is the best, and Cheeta Chomps from Envirokids for snacks. I put them in a bowl and let my 14mo dd at it. At $5 a box, she is the only one I let eat them.

She also loves soups. I make her a pot of soup every couple of days (she has to be dairy free, so no quick convienient things like cheese chunks or macaroni). I do ckn/noodle slightly ground with an immersion blender and she loves minestrone and veg beef and (can you believe it) - chili. The richer the broth the more she likes it. This kid likes her seasonings.

We also have downgraded in nutrition to boxes of dyno-nuggets from Sam's club. Everyone LOVES them for a snack or lunch once a week.

Also- and I find this amusing - she MUST have a coffee cup of hot chamomile tea every morning when we have our coffee. She won't touch her oatmeal until she has it. This little girl loves hot (well, warm anyway) tea!

For breakfast my dd (23 mos) usually has some Super Porridge, fruit and every other day an egg. Usually for lunch she has some yogurt (plain) or cottage cheese some kind of veggie, some kind of starch (bread, dry pasta) and maybe some fruit. Dinner is what we eat. Tonight that was salad, dahl, millet, and broccoli and cauliflower. She used to have a hard time eating what we ate at dinner, but I stumbled upon a great trick that I even used tonight with astounding success. When she has something new I have her try it right from the pot while I am making it. She almost always loves it and clamours for more. We are vegetarian so we don't eat the standard stuff, but my dd is really good at eating what I make. She likes stuff with alot of flavor, but it was a struggle in the beginning. In fact, I posted many months ago because she wouldn't eat dinner. My dd isn't much of a snacker. She always has to have some kind of dry cereal when we are out and about (Cheerios and Kashi Go Lean and her faves) and she will occasionally have an apple with cheese at home.

A quick and easy substitute for my grandson when our dinner is just too hard for him to eat is instant mashed potatoes made with chicken broth or milk. Other favorites: Shredded cheese keeps him busy for ages, scrambled or boiled eggs, apple sauce, bran muffins, PBJ, lunchmeat (like sliced turkey), rice with beans (or without), oatmeal with banana, sliced banana, mandarin oranges straight from the can, peaches (canned or fresh ripe), pineapple chunks, refried beans with cheese, etc. All my kids loved tomatoes, diced, but he doesn't seem to like that.
He is actually quite a good eater, now that I think of it.
