Those of you that buy wheat from Wheat Montana, which wheat do you buy? Prairie Gold, Bronze Chief, Cracked Hard Red Spring, of Hard Red Winter? I want a loaf of bread that tastes good without sacrificng the nutrition. Thanks.
Blessings,
Margaret

I don't use Wheat Montana.. but we all love the flavor of the bread I make with half hard red and half hard white.. I found all hard white was lacking a bit in the flavor we like in whole wheat bread. Half and half keeps it a bit lighter than all red but with a nice flavor.
ah just checked.. the hard white I use is the Golden 86.

Another vote for Golden 86...your kids will hardly even know its whole wheat bread and the protein content is great.

Is there a way to get the wheat berries without breaking the bank with shipping charges? I put $12 worth of wheat in my cart and the shipping charges were more than 3 times that!

Amy,
You might call the company and see if anyone coordinates bulk orders in your area. I ordered from them for the first time - don't have the wheat yet, but I'm sure looking forward to trying it!

I'm not sure if this will help but this website sells wheatberries & the shipping is about $5.00. Maybe there's a "catch" but that's what it looks like to me.
The other place to buy wheatberries is through a co-op.
HTH!

The Wheat Montana website lists regional dealers and local distributors. When I was in PA the nearest I found (by calling the 800 #s) was 1 hour away from me -- an Amish farm store, and they weren't open on weekends.
Here in Cincinnati I was lucky enough to find that "my" farmer sells it by the pound -- by request. So I could buy 1 pound or 25 pounds through her. Ask around your farmers' markets, you might find someone local and you won't have to pay so much shipping.
Haven't checked shipping from any of these places, but I know lehman's ships, as well as walton feed, mountaintopsmilling, and countrybaker.

walton feed shipping can be kept reasonable if you can buy large quantities and if you're not too terribly far away. (they're in ID)
That's who I buy from. Nothing comes close to my area so.. unless I want to run some sort of buying club.. my best bet was finding the closest to me and then doing the UPS hundredweight charge.. and getting 500lbs at a time to knock the price down that bit more (about once a year)

Thank you so much. You all have been a wealth of information. We had a coop that delivered once a month which is where I bought most of our food. They have gone out of business and I am totally at a loss for healthy sources. The closest health food grocery store is over 2 hours away and even they don't have grains in bulk, which is the way I like to buy. Thanks again so much.
Blessings,
Margaret
