Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK folks -- this is one of those "shot in the dark" posts which I occasionally put out there for you to try to help me with.

There are two foreign (Italian?) videos we watched this Spring that are wonderful and my husband would really like for his birthday. BUT, I can't remember the titles .

The first is set in post WW2 Communist country where a little boy escapes from a concentration camp and searches for his mom in Italy. A British woman living in Italy helps him find her. Sound familiar?

The other is also set in Italy and is about a REALLY poor family who are told their young son should be sent to school to use his God-given intelligence. The father has to make his shoes so the little boy can walk to the far distant school each day. The father cuts down a tree growing by the river and later is caught and punished by the "lord of the manor". Sound familiar?

Any assistance with these videos would REALLY be wonderful.

Well the first one sounds similar to I Am David but the boy is going to Denmark and doesn't know his mother is there until he gets there.

I've never seen the second, but it is the Tree of Wooden CLogs? Just guessing by the plot

Not sure of the first one yet, although it does sound familiar.

But the second one is The Tree of the Wooden Clogs. I love that one, although it very slow. Lots of Catholic living family traditions.

The first one isn't "Life is Beautiful"? That seemed too obvious, but thought I would throw it out there.

I would have guessed "I Am David" also, but it isn't a foreign film.

The website has more info that might trigger a memory.

Well, you all got me interested. My library didn't have "I am David" but they had "North to Freedom" which is the book that this movie is based on. The library also had "Life is Beautiful" so I put that on hold as well. "The Tree of Wooden Clogs" sounds great too. I need to go to Blockbuster. I am glad you couldn't remember the titles Mary. Thanks.

Enjoy! I am partial to "Life is Beautiful" because it was the movie dh and I saw our on first date. I'd recommend watching it in subtitles, and not the English version.

Tree of the Wooden Clogs I've only seen once, about 4 years ago. But some of those images are very vivid. My favorite part is about the grandfather growing tomatoes. Whenever I'm gardening my tomatoes those images return to me. And I also love the village gathering for the rosary.

"life is Beautiful" does not have anyone escaping from a concentration camp as far as I remember. At the end, the camp is liberated by the Allies, but everyone is still in the camp. I know at first I thought that was the one you were thinking about, but I really don't think so, unless I'm mis-remembering.

Peace,
Nancy
