Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My oldest dd, Isabella, who is 9.5, has played soccer since she was 4. This is her 4th season with the same team. While we've enjoyed this team in the past, I'm feeling quite frustrated right now - as is my daughter.

Despite talking to the coach about wanting a chance to play forward, which she used to play quite well, she is being put in as goalie all the time. Now, she is the best goalie this team has but this is supposed to be recreational soccer!

Apparently, yesterday at her game, she feigned injuries a couple of times so that she could be put out of goalie to ask to play forward. The coach was very frustrated. (He dropped her off at my house after the game). Now, I wasn't at the game - as I can't be in 4 places at once, but I did go to her game last week and I suspected a similar stunt...but I just watched.

Yesterday, I tried to talk with her about it. She said she didn't do that, however, later, when I encouraged the idea of writing a letter to her coach to explain her desire to play a different position, she grew upset, folded her arms and yelled, "He doesn't listen! He never listens!"

You see, what frustrates me is that Isabella has tried to talk to the coach about playing forward. My dh tried to talk with him. Now, we have this situation and I want to scream at him, "You're the one not listening!"

Please remember, this is RECREATIONAL soccer.

Have any of you had a similar situation to deal with?

This coach said to me, "You know, Michael Jordan didn't want to play the position he was put in but look how well he did."

Ok, she's 9. Won't be 10 till March. And now she doesn't want to play soccer. She's not going anywhere near Michael Jordan's playing style feeling stumped.

Her heart is no longer in it. I'm sad for her.

Any ideas?

Maria,
I would start with the league rule book. For recreational soccer at U-9 in our league (and most surrounding us), the rules clearly state that no child is allowed to play more than one quarter as the goalkeeper and if they play in goal, they must play two more quarters on the field. It's really unusual to allow designated keepers that young.

Same rules applied here.

My oldest played soccer for twelve years and this is our first year when none of the children are playing.

I've never seen a child play goalie through the whole game. Goodness! children have to RUN that energy off!!!

And don't forget that there's likely parents listening to the opposite complaint (I never get to play goalie) as well as other children that may feel stuck.. if the coach won't listen to you singly, it's very possible to speak with other parents and try and get the coach to listen to you collectively.

If you feel like the coach is ignoring you and your daughter and that talking to him further wouldn't help, you could try talking to the commissioner or director for your daughter's age group. I would think this would be particulary helpful if your league does have rules that the coach is violating about how long a child can be in the goalkeeper position.
