Homeschoolers For Life is sponsoring its first annual Pro-Life Essay
Contest. Homeschooled students between the ages of seven and 17 are eligible
to enter this pro-life essay contest. Essays must be postmarked by October 16,
2006 and winners will be announced on Monday January 22, 2007.
Students will compete in three age categories:
Primary Writers, ages 7 to 11
Junior Writers, ages 12 to 14
Senior Writers, ages 15 to 17
Senior writers will compose an original essay of between 1000 and 1200 words
(typed and double-spaced) answering one of the following questions as the topic
of the essay. Issues must be addressed specifically using research on the legal,
moral, social and religious arguments surrounding the chosen topic. The
opinions expressed by senior writers must avoid being emotional appeals; rather,
they should be supported by fact and contain logical, moral, religious, legal
and/or medical arguments.
1. One of the primary reasons for promoting artificial contraception is that if
“unwanted” pregnancies can be avoided, abortion will become rare and
unnecessary. However, time has proven this premise to be false as the rise in
use of artificial contraceptives in the 20th century was closely followed by an
dramatic increase in abortions. Explore the connection between artificial
contraception and abortion.
2. A common argument of the culture of death is that legalized abortion is
necessary in order to help underprivileged families deal with the economic and
financial strain of “unplanned” pregnancies. Does abortion actually help
minorities improve their standard of living or does the fact that 60 to 70% of
aborted babies belong to racial minorities have a negative socio-economic
impact?
3. Abortion and euthanasia can be considered two sides of the same coin.
Explore the philosophical, logical and moral connections between them.
The first place senior winner will receive Ipod Video (MA002LL; 30 gig) and
$100 cash.
The second place senior winner will receive $150 cash and $100 in pro-life
gear (t-shirts, hoodies, caps, backpack, stickers, etc) from American Life League (
www.prolifegear.com)
The third place winner will receive $100 cash and $50 in pro-life gear (t-
shirts, hoodies, caps, backpack, stickers, etc) from American Life League (www.
prolifegear.com)
Two "Honorable Mention" essays will be chosen, and the authors will each
receive a $50 cash prize.
Junior writers will compose an original essay of between 800 and 1000 words
(typed and double-spaced) with one of the following Bible quotes as the theme.
1. "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born I
consecrated you.” Jeremiah 1:4-5
2. “Truly children are a gift from the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward.”
Psalm 127:3
3. “For you created me in my inmost being; you knit me together in my
mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your
works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:13-16
Primary writers will compose an original essay of between 600 and 800 words
with one of the above Bible quotes (writer’s choice) as the theme.
Junior and Primary writers should use their selected quote as a starting point
for an essay focusing on God’s great gift of life to all of us. These essays should
be life-affirming, but will not be expected to handle the issue of abortion
specifically as this is too mature a topic for such young children.
First place winners will receive $150 cash and $100 in pro-life gear (t-shirts,
hoodies, caps, backpack, stickers, etc) from American Life League (www.
prolifegear.com).
Second place winners will receive $125 cash and $50 in pro-life gear (t-shirts,
hoodies, caps, backpack, stickers, etc) from American Life League (www.
prolifegear.com).
Third place winners will receive $100 cash and $25 in pro-life gear (t-shirts,
hoodies, caps, backpack, stickers, etc) from American Life League (www.
prolifegear.com).
Two "Honorable Mention" essays will be chosen from the junior and primary
categories respectively, and the authors will each receive a $50 cash prize.
Essays will be divided among the judges (selected by Homeschoolers for Life)
who will evaluate them on grammar, style, content and persuasiveness. Each
judge will select three essays (semi-finalists). All judges will receive a copy of the
semi-finalists and vote on which essays will be awarded the final prizes.
Essays must include a cover sheet stating the author’s name, age, mailing
address and email address (e-mail address is optional). To participate in this
contest, essays must be postmarked by October 16, 2006 and two copies
mailed to:
Homeschoolers For Life
P.O. Box 273
Kilmarnock, VA 22482
There is no entry fee, but donations to help defray the cost of the contest are
gratefully accepted.
