Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi-

Can anyone recommend favorite books to help celebrate our Liturgical year? I especially want a cookbook to help celebrate Saints and other feast days.   But, other things such as stories, meditations, etc would be great.

Thanks,
Cindy

Jenn is the resident expert on this topic and I imagine will post when she see this. She had a really thorough listing of books (and especially cookbooks) on this topic that was posted on the CCM list last fall - It was moved to the files so that it would be available for us to look back on as needed (file name ly.doc). THere are two websites that I like to use also.

Domestic-Church
Catholic Culture is my absolute favorite site. Jenn has done most of the writing here for them.

Dear Cindy,

Please go to the Living Faith Archive for a link to the full text of one of my favorites, Around the Year with the Trapp Family by Maria Von Trapp.

I'm blushing...I'm no expert...I just love this topic! Cindy, if you aren't a member of CCM Yahoo group, send me a private message with your email address and I can send that file to you. But for available sources in print, the cookbook that you will really enjoy is A Continual Feast by Evelyn Vitz. Covers the temporal and sanctoral cycle, that is, both the seasons and the saints. And the recipes are not only for desserts, but practical meals and traditional dishes for feast days!

I second Alice's recommendation for Around the Year with the Trapp Family. You can find used copies online on sites like www.bookfinder.com...don't pay more than $20, but it's worth it!

I really like the Catholic Culture website too! Thanks Jenn!! We've done lots of their ideas and recipes this past year. Also the Domestic Church website sell two books that I really like. An Advent and Christmas one and the Lent and Easter one. Great ideas, recipes, crafts, coloring pages. Also a Year with God from Catholic Heritage Curriculum. A little bit pricey, but we've used it a lot.

The authors, Peter and Catherine Fournier, are coming out with a new book, Marian Devotions in the Domestic Church later this year. Also I wanted to announce that they are going to be guest speakers at our Catholic homeschool conference here in Colorado in June. If anyone would like to join us we would love to have you come. Colorado Catholic Home Educators Conference

It's a beautiful state to visit - I've got lots of educational field trip ideas!

Those Fourniers never cease to amaze me! They do great work!

I had compiled a "Listmania list" on Amazon for the Liturgical Year that might help, also. I bring this up with the subject of the Fourniers as Catherine refers people to my list and helped me update some outdated references.

I just wanted to let you all know that it's available now! I stumbled upon it at our local Catholic shop today. I was pressed for time and didn't get to look through it thoroughly, but as I have their Easter book (and like it very much) I bought it on the spot. It looks really good. Has anyone else seen it yet?

No I haven't seen it yet. Thanks Dawn for letting me know it has finally been published. This thread is over 2 years old! I'll have to see if I can find a copy locally. Let us know your thoughts when you have a chance to really read it, Dawn.

Dawn I bought it a couple of weeks ago at my book look and I liked what I saw, browsing through it. I could have bought their other book for Advent/Christmas/Epiphany but there is so much info in other books and on the net, I left it.

To find a book exclusively dealing with Marian feasts and devotions is a real treat!

The contents is broken into 3 main categories - Family Activities, Marian Feasts & then Crafts.

In Family Activities there are such things as, Family Consecration, The Rosary (and headings for all the other main marian sacramentals) Marian Saturdays, Crowning Our Lady...

Marian Feasts it starts with Saturday Masses then has the following feasts:
Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God
Candlemas
Our Lady of Lourdes
The Annunciation
Mary, Help of Christians
Feast of the Visitation
Our Lady of Perpetual Help
Our Lady of Mt Carmel
The Assumption
Queenship of Mary
Birthday of Mary
Our Lady of Sorrows
Our Lady of the Rosary
Presentation of Mary
Our Lady of Gudalupe

Then under crafts, some of them include Beeswax candles for Candlemas, Paper flowers, Mary baskets, Cross stitch pattern for Memorare Roses, Mary dolls.

For example with one of the Marian Feasts - Our Lady Help of Christians - this is our patroness of Australia and it has two pages of information, including the history, also the connection to St John Bosco, a consecration in the home, recipe for Laminingtons!! (a real Aus food) things to do to observe the feast. Other feasts may have one page of information, they vary.

Editing: There is a back section too, with colouring pages, images of Our Lady and images for every mystery of the Rosary, including all the Luminous mysteries, there is a beautiful colouring image of Our Lady of Guadlaupe that I really love.
