What's your favorite "version"/"edition" of field guides for kids?

I have Birds of Ohio and we love it - it's organized by color and the kids can find the bird they are looking for. I also have Peterson's bird guide and Peterson's tree and shrub guide - but (and maybe this is just inexperience) they don't seem to be "user friendly."

To make a long story longer, we've seen two caterpillars now (I'm pretty sure some sort of moth) that googling just doesn't seem to turn up any results. Or none that I like. FWIW one was white with two rows of black dots, the other more grayish with a black stripe down the back. Both were fuzzy. Googling results in references to poisonous caterpillars without any pictures for verification (not even any good pics on "what's that bug").

Hmnn...this is getting a little long. Field guides - for caterpillars at hand, and flowers and trees to be discovered...suggestions? Oh - we're in NE Ohio

For basic caterpillar id I like my Golden guide to butterflies and moths. It shows the pic of the caterpillar beside the adult. Very nice.

I second the Peterson's First guide to Caterpillars. For a more complete - and bigger guide, I just bought Caterpillars of Eastern North America: A Guide to Identification and Natural History (Princeton Field Guides) (Paperback)by David L. Wagner (Author). It is a beautiful book with great photos.

My kids have loved the various Audubon Field guides. I think we have 4-5 now in much loved and mangled condition :-) When they were younger they just paged through the color plates, but now the read to detailed notes in the back. Happy hunting!
