Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What books can you all recommend for our study of Uganda. Looking for books for all ages here, picture books to adult. I've noticed many books on the Martyrs of Uganda, but wondered if any of you all have specific recommendations (or warnings) for a particular book.

BTW a big thank you for the recommendation (from whom? I can't remember) for the book on AFrica, "The White Fathers" What a great read!

When we studied Africa last year, Uganda was one of the countries my dss wanted to investigate. (I gave them a map and let them pick 10 countries.)

Aside from the "Countries of the World" series book, Uganda, by Kingsley Oghojafor, we also read:

Beatrice's Goat by Page McBrier
One More Elephant: The Fight to Save Wildlife in Uganda by Richard Sobol
Nelson Mandela's Favorite African Folktales by Nelson Mandela (this had various countries listed with a folktale for each)
and
Ebola by Allison Stark Draper (weird, but my 11ds is intrigued by the various diseases of the different parts of the world.)

We also watched two videos:
Gorilla Quest by Bear Tooth Communications Company with Jack Hanna, and
The Jacques Cousteau Odyssey Vol. 1 The Nile, parts 1 and 2 (I used to love the Jacques Cousteau specials when I was little!)

I just asked them what they remember about Uganda, and they do remember where it is, and also: the Nile and the waterfalls, how beautiful it was, the animals, and Idi Amin!
(Why they remember him, when I touched only briefly- they remember the kinds of things he did, and even where he went in exile, and that some thought he had an illness that affected him neurologically- although I did not give them details of the illness . I guess it is like the older boys remembering the various explorers either by how ruthless they were or how they died. !)

I didn't use any particular book for the Ugandan Martyrs, just printed out info from sites like catholic.org or

this site.

I hope this is helpful.

God Bless,
Stacy in MI

ps how was your trip this summer? My 15 yo ds was on Mackinac (worked the Fort) the same week you were there? July 29-Aug 5?

Stacy,
Thanks for the ideas and titles. You've got me on another "treasure hunt" for resources, now

Did your ds enjoy working at the Fort? In the end, we decided not to go to Mackinac, because I couldn't stand the thought of driving 800 miles in one day, only to get there and have to leave the next day without having time to poke around the Fort and the island. Decided to save it for another trip when we could spend some real time there exploring. I must say, I was very disappointed to miss it this year... The fort sounds really neat. Thanks for the ideas for NEXT visit!
