How important is this? My 11th grader is struggling to learn Latin (with LC II) again-- we tried it in 9th and gave up. We have the DVD but she doesn't understand and I don't either. I never took Latin or any language. I have done LC I with her and that was easy enough. The grammar is killing us. I can't afford Regina Caeli or Seton or a tutor for that matter if there was one around. We live in the sticks and the closest town is 20 minutes away and it is small. Plus I have many littles so I can't be packing them all up to run to a tutor more than once a week. She doesn't know if she will go to college and if she does, she will go to a community college her first two years. She wants to do Latin since we attend a Latin Mass and because she is considering a vocation to the religious life in a traditional order that does the Mass and office in Latin. Our church is over an hour away so there is no one close from there that could help us. Any ideas?

Have you ever used LPH? That's Our Lady of Perpetual Help, a homeschooling site with very reasonable on-line classes--reasonable as in $20 a class. Yes, I realize it's geared primarily for younger students, but I have used it for older students as a "spine" last year and I signed up ds16 to do the Latin Mass class this year. It might provide the review your daughter may need to get back into the Latin groove and procede with LCII. Maybe it's too basic, OTOH, what's the harm of a little review, not to mention a boost from another source besides Mom? Even though I took Latin many years ago, and majored in languages in university, I'm taking the LPH Latin class with another of my sons this Fall, figure it will keep me on track---and studying the syllabus, it looks like they cover some significant turf.
If it doesn't work out, you jettison it---or you customize it to fit your LC program (I've never used LC, so I'm not familiar with how it works, but assume you go at your own pace). Or you just print out the classes to keep as a resource to aid your understanding of Latin grammar. I think you could usefully apply it several ways. Anyway, you might take a gander at the program.
Good luck!

I'm so computer-challenged, I just google "LPH homeschooling" and go from there (hey, it works!)

I have never gotten along very well with the LC books, escpecially LCII. I know I am not the only one who feels this way. Do you have any other Latin programs that you could try? I know that so many like Henle or Wheelock better than LCII and even Memoria Press says you can jump from LCI to Henle.
My son is doing Basic Language Principles this year and seems to be doing well with it. MODG uses this in 7th grade but allows it to be used for full credit up to 12th. A good friend of mine said her dd finally understood the Latin grammar from the LC programs after using this. I don't think it is very expensive to purchase and you might be able to find a used one on cathswap.
Blessings....

True, true. Another book might be all you need. Neither LC-or any Latin program-works across the board for everyone. My non-Latiny son used "The Latin Road to English Grammar" to start out with, and it helped ease him into Henle. I thought their grammar explanations were pretty good.

I didn't mention the "Latin Road" earlier because it is SO expensive and you mentioned being tight on funds. I was able to pick it up at a used curriculum sale last spring for $25 and we are just finishing our 1st week in it (w/ 5th grade dd) I am planning on moving slowly through it since she is so young, but this is the one she picked out of everything we have. I can't make any definitive comment on it yet, but she does really explain the grammar portion very well it seems.

well, we tried Our Roman roots after LC I and it wasn't so good of a fit either. I am hesitant to spend more money when I just spent $75 on the LC II DVD and books. I guess I could resell them. Thanks for the ideas.

Yes, that was our experience as well. LCI was pretty much a breeze but, since LCII got much more into grammar, that was more challenging. I found I had to really "teach" it using the teacher's guide. We're doing Henle I this year & that's going very well. Henle explains the grammar rules in a very orderly way.
