Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi all you veterans out there....
Because of just starting out, and mostly because of my 3 other little ones who will be "present" next year as I homeschool my ds for 1st grade, I am looking for a program that I can use/fall back on at those times when I can't seem to get a minute to think (we had many of these moments this year, and my youngest will be 1 next Oct. and much more distracting I expect) Can anyone tell me anything of their experience with Alphaphonics or Sound Beginnings? We used MODG's "teaching your Child To Read in 100 easy lessons" this year...(YAWN) I'd like something a little more engaging if you know what I mean...yet, simplicity is the key for me also w/ my littles so little yet.
thanks for any feedback you can offer!
God Bless!

Hi Kerry,

I used 100 Easy Lessons with 3 of my kids. My 5 year old is using it now. It is not exciting, but I like the cuddle time and by the end of it they were reading at about a 2nd grade level.

After that we jump into Sound Beginnings. This can become monotonous also, but it is simple with everything laid out for the parent. I have stuck with it because it has worked well with my kids. The older three are all good readers. The ease of use is key for me. I don't have to plan anything. It is also scripted like Saxon math.

I do not have experience with alphaphonics. Hope this has helped.

Blessings.

Thanks Jeanne. I appreciate your input. I've also enjoyed "100 easy lessons" until about the last month or so when it seems that my ds hit a wall or something. he started saying he "hates" phonics when he so enjoyed it before. I'm so new at this. I 'm not sure if we just reached a point that is more challenging or if we need a new approach or if I need to just sit back and give it a rest for a while.
At any rate,I am praying about it, sitting back for now , while trying to gain as much info as possible before we hit the summer hs conferences. Thanks again for your feedback!
God Bless!

Hi Kerry,

I used SB with my 9 y.o. dd and loved it. I am using it now for my 7 y.o. dd and she is progressing nicely with it as well. I heartily recommend it. That said, I would stress that, for most 1st graders, SB has A LOT of writing and the lessons can get pretty long. You could break up the lessons into two days as I have had to do occasionally... It is recommended for 2nd grade by Julia Fogassy, its' author--and I think that is because it is a FULL language arts program with reading, phonics, dictation, handwriting, spelling...I LOVE this because it is allows me to cover all these in one lesson time but it is labor intensive for mommy as well as child, but well worth the time invested.

I haven't used Alpha Phonics so I can't speak to that program. Feel free to private messenger me for more details on SB...Your oldest would do very well with SB, I just know that even my oldest child who really taught herself to read at 4 (I used 100 EL and thought I taught her but she really did it on her own!!), had to have it adapted here and there because it had a lot of writing and she was younger like your oldest!

Best of luck in your search!

Thanks Jennifer. Your experience seems to be a common one w/ SB. It seems that the only drawback I keep hearing about is that it contains alot of writing as you said. Unfortunately, my ds has NO interest in writing yet...doesn't even like to color. Perhaps I'll wait until his interest/abilities in that area improve.   Thanks so much for your feedback!
God Bless!
