Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a post up today rather in the tradition of Cay's Mystery Literature Locations.

Drop by if you'd like and leave your best guess in the comments!

The answer will go up at midnight tonight.

It was so much fun! Marianna has had such a great time checking for new comments, our president study has served us well, what with Truman's and Eisenhower's guesses. Mark Twain she knew from Tom Sawyer, of course, but Hemingway she only knows as the man with the six-toed cats in Key West!

Hey Jennifer,

How did I miss this thread? Good old Harry Truman. My mother's family is from Missouri and I have a funny, true story about Harry S. Truman. He

Harry Truman grew up in MO not far from my grandmother's hometown and was great friends with one of her dear friends, a grand old gal named Mary Chiles. Mary was very smart, very entertaining and VERY outspoken (sometimes synonymous with 'crabby'!). I remember Mary telling me once (around age 13) that I was turning out "rather well for a Spoiled Brat..." Anyway, one day Mary was at my Grandmother's house in Lexington, MO. They were playing croquet in the backyard when the housekeeper came running outside, "Miss Chiles, Miss Chiles, there's a phone call for you". Mary didn't look up from her game, "Can't you see I'm in the middle of a shot?" "But, but..." the housekeeper gasped, "It's the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!!!" According to my grandmother, Mary's focus-still riveted on her croquet shot-never budged as she responded in a steely, ultra-iritated tone, "Well tell him I'm BUSY!!!!" and went on to finish her game. First things first, afterall!

I love these mystery locations, even if I never get them!

So funny!

I've always liked Lexington, MO, with the cannonball in the courthouse column...

Wow, Jennifer. You know about the cannonball! My great-grandmother was actually living there when that happened! The legend is that the noise of the cannonball hit launched her into labor... A bunch of my brothers went to the military academy there, too, where they regularly renact the Civil War battle, "The Battle of the Hemp Bales". My brothers have vivid memories of bivouacking at the park there in preparation for the reenactment.

Are you originally from Missouri???

I spent about a dozen years all over MO and taught in a tiny town outside of Warrensburg near Lexington but I'm originally from CO.

You have some deep ties to MO, it sounds like, did you get to stop and visit on your way West this year? Love the cannonball story! That is the sort of stuff they should put on those what-happened-here-in-history signs, don't you think?
