Thankfully this prayer request is for nothing more serious than a (multiple) tooth extraction (3 today - 6 more before he's done ) but my son is very nervous about having this done. A few years ago he had a tooth pulled and it was very frightening and painful. Today he will have novacaine (sp?) and gas to relax him (which makes me nervous ) and will be allowed to listen to an audiobook during the procedure. I'm sure I'll be asked to wait outside.
If you could say a quick prayer for his comfort and that the procedure goes smoothly, I would appreciate it!

Dawn,
I was going to respond to your post earlier but I got called away from the computer.
Now that it is very late and I should be in bed, I'm back.
I have prayed for your dear boy.
Hope all went well.

Thank you for your prayers, everyone. I wish I could say the procedure went smoothly, but the best thing I CAN say is it's over for now. He has 6 more to take out on the 28th.
It was, in a word, harrowing. I could hear him screaming as I waited in the waiting room. Apparently the novacaine was very difficult to administer and it hurt him - A LOT. Now, I have to say, my son is a very laid-back, quiet chid, so when I heard him YELLING at the dentist to "Stop! Please stop!" I almost lost my breakfast right there in the waiting room. I was on my feet immediately, but the receptionist assured me it was just the needle and he'd be fine. Three minutes later they came out to say he was done - all 3 teeth were out. They led me back to where he was recuperating and - now reminding myself there could be MUCH worse things going on other than just teeth being removed - I almost crumpled seeing my little boy laying there "recuperating," pale as a sheet and looking completely traumatized. I just held him and we wept a little, I told him he was very brave and it was all done.
Questioning him later, he said it was not the extractions, but the novacaine that hurt so badly. He said they had told him to raise his hand if anything hurt but when he did they just continued. That scared him and that was why he screamed for them to stop.
Sorry, I am rambling again. By midday he was *fine* and Tylenol, soft foods and an old videtape of children's holiday specials in his bedroom (special treat) had him feeling better in no time.
I am just shell shocked myself. Again, reminding myself it was just teeth - nothing worse - but all I could think about was what it must be like for parents whose children are facing something more dire. It is the worst sound in the world, your child's screams.
Thanks again for thinking of us and praying for us. We'll need your prayers again on the 28th!

Sheesh, poor kid. And his poor momma! Doesn't the Dentist have a numbing gel (I don't know the technical name)that he rubs on the gums so that he can't feel the injection when it goes in? Maybe next time you could ask for laughing gas? I would talk to the Dentist for alternative options prior to the next round of extractions!
Will keep praying,
Mary

Oh Dawn - your poor little guy!
I would also ask about the numbing gel. Nowadays they should be able to avoid the pain of the novacaine injection.
I had to have 5 pulled out at one time as a child due to my jaw being too small to hold them all. I've had a fear of dentistry ever since because, not only did I feel the novacaine injections, the freezing wasn't complete and I felt all the extractions (my dentist didn't believe me when I said I could still feel things - apparantly I'd had too much of the drugs to be able to feel anything ). Thankfully, my current dentist is SO much better!
I'm sure this nightmare didn't happen to your son, just wanted to illustrate that I empathize his pain. Keeping you all in my prayers...

Well, he did have gel *and* gas if you can believe it! I was there when they did the gel and ds told me they did the novacaine next and then the gas after (maybe they should have done the gas before the needle).
They did tell me the needle had to go in a hard part of the gums (not the fleshy cheek) because of the location of the teeth to be removed. (All 3 were on top.) Next time it will be bottom teeth. I would like to ask them to use more precautions before the shot, and to be more respectful of his emotions - if he is beside himself with fear stop and address him. Don't just wave it away.
And you can be sure if he screams next time, I'm going in.

Oh Dawn, I just saw this. I've put the date in my calendar and you can be sure I'll be praying!!! The poor thing. I'll be praying for the Holy Spirit to guide his dentist's eyes and hands as well.

I am so sorry he went through that. How horrible of them to just dismiss him like that.
Julia had to have a root canal when she was 8. She hit her teeth on the headboard and broke one of the front ones. It took several very painful visits to finish it and novacaine doesn't work on her at all. It was very difficult for both of us.
I am always in the room with any of my kids for ANY procedure, medical or dental, period. If the doctor/dentist has an issue with that, we use someone else. The ONLY exception is an actual operating room in a hospital where the child is sedated and that is only because I would be of no use to the child until they wake up. In this case I am in the recovery room waiting for them to be brought in. I know some parents are squimish about procedures but it doesn't bother me. I would rather be able to keep an eye on things and give comfort or direction (to the child, not the staff ) when needed.
I will be praying for the next round!
Blessings,
Krisann

Dawn,
I am so sorry your ds had such an awful and painful experience! I am no dental fan, myself (even though my 'lil sis is one.)
I will pray for him (and you ) for his next round, on the 28th.
God Bless,
Stacy in MI
