What can anyone tell me about these? I'd heard of them but knew nothing about them till today. I googled them and am now interested. Also, I'm reading TJE and it mentions them on one the the recommended booklists. Any thoughts?

Dear Courtney,
I was given a set of these as a present about 8 years ago. I've only opened the primer, oh maybe one time.
In my edition, the writing is small. The pictures are nice but similar to what you would find in the Serl books. (We have used Primary Language Lessons and Intermediate Language Lessons where the writing is larger.)
I have known people who use the McGuffeys but it wasn't the set I have. They were used books and they looked like the Catholic Faith and Freedom readers.
I believe Kolbe used to suggest the McGuffey readers, maybe the school still does. Maybe they have more information on how to best use them.

Along the same questions, what about the American Cardinal Readers? Does anyone use them? What do you think?
I have to say that I enjoy our McGuffey Readers. They're fairly new and the print is pretty good and I like to use the pictures for helping my son find all the details in the pictures.

An irl friend has just bought a set of 1830s reprint and has been asking for ideas on how to use these.
She writes: They were used to teach generations of American children reading, writing, spelling and elocution as well as grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, handwriting, religion, morality and topical lessons amongst other skills. thus capturing my attention.
What an incredible resource, they sound amazing.
Friend also writes: But these days it’s a little hard to know what to do with them. They don’t come with instructions, a teacher’s manual or any clues about, well, anything! They are just books broken into lessons.
So how are these used? My interest is captured. Okay in full disclosure I do have a set of McGuffey's stored in my shipping container never opened by me

My mother had these. We rarely used them as I found them hard to read and a bit dry.
One thing that kept me pulling them out to look at them was the Laura Ingalls Wilder connection, but I couldn't make it work for me.
I did think the poetry and excerpts given in the books would provide a baseline for what was the standard back then. The poetry to memorize were good selections to use from.
I'll confess, too, Erin. There was a set at a booksale for a song and I passed them up, because I thought I would never use them. My mother still has hers, and I could borrow them, and I've never felt the urge.

I've been using the primer with my 6yr. old this year as extra reading practice. I'm finding that the pronunciation symbols are helping me explain some sound rules. And Ruth Beechick wrote a Parent's Guide for them. I'm not sure if I'll keep using them. I noticed I pulled out the Catholic National Reader 2 for my second grader this year. Again, just for some read aloud practice.

I sold mine. I thought along the same lines as Jenny.... good for supplemental reading, but then we never did any reading from McGuffey, always choosing to use something else in its place.

Let's see there are four major parts plus an initial overview:
Part 1: Decoding Stage of Reading (5 chapters)
Part 2: Fluency Stage of Reading (7 chapters) including two chapters with ideas for First and Second Readers.
The lessons will say for example (ea. is different):
**"Lesson XV: Theme: sharing. Discuss the actions of James, George, and John, and the results of each. Make up a soty about three children who win some money. What does each child do with it?"
or
** "Lesson XXII: Phonogram: qu. Follow up with a science lesson about bees. Take a field trip, if possible, to see bees at work in hives."
Part 3: Information Stage of Reading (3 chapters, including lessons for Reader 3)
Part 4: Advanced Comprehension Stage of Reading (2 chapters, including lessons for Reader 4)

I had done some research last summer, when I was thinking about these and I knew I had run into a site that focused on the lessons for them. I just couldn't remember what it was earlier. Anyway, here's another resource for them.
