Emily is working on a problem in Algebra 1/2 and we just can't seem to get the same answer that is listed in the answer key. So obviously either we are doing it wrong or the key is wrong.
the problem is:
1/4 (2 1/3 x 1/4 - 5/6) + 7/9
first create improper fraction = 1/4(7/3 x 1/4 - 5/6)+ 7/9
multiply inside () = 1/4(7/12 - 5/6)+ 7/9
create common denominator = 1/4(7/12 - 10/12)+ 7/9
() subtract = 1/4( -3/12 ) + 7/9
multiply = -3/48 + 7/9
create common denominator and add = -9/144 + 112/144 = 103/144
The answer key answer is 163/144
Where did we go wrong?
Thank you!
Krisann

So, I'm no expert but I did love Algebra in school so I thought I would try this for fun. I got the same answer you did. I don't know if this helps or not! Maybe someone else can help.

I also got the same answer you did...both following your fraction work and cheating with a calculator.
The answer key is wrong!!!

THANK YOU! Now I don't feel quite as dumb.
I was afraid someone was going to say "Well duh, you just do x and x.
Thanks again!
Blessings,
Krisann

Actually, I think the answer key is right. I think the problem is wrong.
Instead of: 1/4 (2 1/3 x 1/4 - 5/6) + 7/9
try 1/4 (2 1/3 x 1/4 + 5/6) + 7/9
and you get 163/144.

Well either way it was Saxon's error.
Thank you for working it out with us. We really appreciate it.

Such a good lesson...the answer key is often wrong, no matter the textbook company. I never rely on one for the final word.
