Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have usually celebrated our children's baptism days especially since they all fall on special Church feast days.

I would though, like to start observing everyone's name day. But I am wondering on a few things. I have a Jack (that's his permanent nick name) who is really John Joseph, he has chosen the Apostle John, is that usual for the child to choose? I know there IS a St John Joseph but it doesn't mean he should take that one?

I am in a quandry with my Grace Eunice, there is a St Eunice March 11, but what would be a naming day for a Grace? St Anne which means grace? Or should it be Eunice? Or maybe a Marian title that mentions 'Grace' in it?

Then there is Angela Gabrielle, we named her after the Angel Gabriel, so should that be her naming day or one like Angela Merici, which is her schooling patron?

Joseph is fine, because we named him in honor of St Joseph, and Michael is the Angel Michael, so it is just the oldest three, that I am confused over and would appreciate some advice on all this!

Anne -

You could just celebrate all of the possibles -- wouldn't that be marvelous to go from one celebration to another?

Various of my children have names which are shared by more than one saint (Katherine, Margaret). We are certain to mention others as being patrons of the same name, and therefore extra-special, but we hold the child's name day to be the feast of the one in whose honor we chose to name the child, as we intended that that saint be the child's patron. So, for example, Claire Moira gets both August 11 (for Clare) and March 25, as she was born March 19 and our thought on the "Mary" connection was the Annunciation.

I'm sure there a million ways to do it, but that's our family's choice.

Peace,
Nancy

Anne ~

I have a Grace, too. Her full name is MaryGrace.

Instead of using St. Grace you could use this St. Grace.

We have chosen the Feast of the Annunciation..."Hail Mary, full of Grace."

Let us know what you decide.

My kids so far were easy enough but several of my friends had the same dilema.

They ended up letting the kids choose. When they were old enough to understand they researched several possibilities and let them pray about it and choose the one that they felt led to. It certainly doesnt hurt to change in the future. We all have different times in our lives that we feel more drawn to a particular saint depending on our needs. I guess that could be an advantage of many options!

the middle name vs first name doesnt matter so much Im a Maggie Ann but I use St Anne and St Joachim as my feast day.

Does any family experince led you to a choice. If our baby due in Jan is a girl she will be Mary Marguerite- talk about a lot of choices However we will us Our Lady of olives for her feast day because we have been praying for the baby through her intercession under that title. Plus we dont have any b-days or family feasts in september.

Our God Daughter uses Our Lady of Guadalupe because her mother prayed for her intercession to carry a baby after 12 misscarraiges. She is now 7 -her middle name is Maria in her honor.

There is another thought pick a date that isnt crowded out by tons of other activities

What it comes down to is pick one you or your dc love. We are not going to offend the saints if we dont choose them or change our minds. (All though I used to worry about it )

Good luck Maggie

Suz,

I can't believe it! There are St Graces!!!! Grace was always sad that there was no St Grace and I would say to her, "You, will have to be the first" ...and now I find out that there are TWO of them! Thank you, thank you!

Nancy and Maggie,

Thank you for 'streeeetching my mind' over this! Sometimes I find myself putting all sorts of restrictions on myself ...I don't know why. This is where this forum has been God sent I seem to receive and hear what I NEED to! Wow! The changes I have been makin' and all for the blessed good!

Well, I'll get back to this thread when we have it all worked out....of course in the meantime, I would gladly welcome any other feedback, if anyone has anything else to share.

Nancy,Suz,Maggie,

We use both first and middle names- I wonder if that is ok??
My boys are Matthew James, Michael Anthony, Peter Francis, Mark Andrew, Paul Joseph, and John Patrick. We chose both their names for the specific saints, so each boy has two days we celebrate, for their two saints. So between the boys, dh, and myself, we have 16 feast days a year (greedy, huh? ) Then, adding in confirmation names, we are up to 20 days- although my 15 yo chose a saint whose feast day is his birthday.)
I hope this isn't confusing!

God Bless,

I forgot to mention, one of those St Graces 13 March - is two days apart from St Eunice 11 March, I suppose there could be a double celebration here?

Thanks Stacy you posted yours just as I posted mine and you have proposed an answer to my wonderings.

No, there is something gracious about of this. "My great-grandmother never needed much excuse to celebrate something - we have always lived this way." you will hear that from heaven one day.   A beautiful thought. (I cry at beautiful things )

Or maybe a Marian title that mentions 'Grace' in it?

My first thought when reading this was that I would probably use one of the feast days of Mary under her "Our Lady of Grace" titles.

May 31 - Mary, Mediatrix of All Graces
June 9 - Mary, Virgin Mother of Grace

or January 21 - Our Lady of Altagracia (Our Lady of High Grace) - you could then tie in this fantastic picture book that was mentioned in the Catholic Mosaic forums -
A Gift of Gracias.

Our children have Old Testament first names so their name days are associated with their middle names. As far as choosing - it could be the obvious saint after which the child is named (in general we do that) or have them choose. Our daughter's middle name is a Marian name so she got to choose which Feast Day to be hers. We ended up with October 7 - Our Lady of the Rosary, mostly because it was one of the closest Marian feasts to the name days of her older brothers (Sept. 29 - Archangel Micheal, and Sept. 30 - Jerome.) She felt left out since theirs are a day apart so one more week wasn't too bad to wait!

When I heard Our Lady of Grace, I thought of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal - November 27th.

All these lovely titles of Our Lady referring to grace, she who was full of grace. It was one of the reasons we named her Grace, thinking of one of the most beautiful passages in the Bible, "full of grace" at the Annunciation and this is why we named our next daughter, Angela Gabrielle and if we were to have another daughter, it would be, Annuncia Mary - so it might be a good thing to celebrate the feast of the Annunciation, making it a special 'girls' day.

We also have a great love of the miraculous medal in our home - a special love - so much 'food for thought' in all of this!

I am having a big Catholic Mosaic 'book look' in my home city in October and I should receive all the books in September, so I looking forward with great anticipation in reading "A Gift of Gracias" - if Grace really loves it, it certainly can be another feast day to consider.

....it's funny that I use to think that Grace's name was the most restrictive for patrons and the like, and now I can see that she is the most fortunate, with saints AND titles of Our Lady to call her own!

Thank you so much for these great thoughts that keep enriching this thread.

Jumping in here a bit late, Anne, but I have a Mary Grace, too, and we have chosen her name day to be June 9--the feast of Our Lady of Grace.

We have a John Paul and decided to use the apostle John as his patron but are looking forward to the day soon where we can also celebrate another name day in honor of our beloved Pope, John Paul II!

Isn't this so much fun?

This is how I felt as well. We've always prayed to each child's saint at night, but stumbled when we came to Grace, usually going with 'Our Lady of Grace'. Now she has few choices. Thank you so much for this thread!

When we have numerous choices, we choose the Saint that is farthest from the child's birthday. Our 10yo ds has now decided to switch Saint days as he feels closer to a different St. John.
