 Help...my two year old is letting himself out of his carseat. He used to only unlatch the chest portion...now he is unlatching the rest of it between his legs. He popped up behind me while I was driving for the second time this week.
Is there a more secure way to restrain him in the car?
He is challenging me all day long and I'm exhausted. Driving in the car with Veggie Tales and a snack used to bring me some solace

A more difficult seat, maybe? Kateri cannot get out of her seat and she is pretty clever and at times, quite determined to get out. I think my seats are all Graco and I even have trouble getting them open.
I can empathize, been there, done that! 
If that doesn't work, have Jeremy threaten him. LOL! Charlie is really good for that type of thing. For some reason, they listen to him.

Can you look for a new lock? Ds did this when he was about 2 and I was able to get a new chest lock that he couldn't unfasten. We went to ToysRUs and they had it in the car seat "accessory" aisle. They might also have a new lower lock too. Or call the carseat company and see if they have ideas.
I remember those days....

We changed the chest piece on one carseat. So, now he is able to open three different kinds ...being able to unlatch the buckle between his legs finished the job!
He stayed buckled up this morning  until I parked at home. I had to take my big ds to football practice and that just left me in the car with 2 yr ds and 1 mo old baby. I sure do rely on my big dc to help so much!
I am trying to remember to praise him for staying buckled

I can't help, only empathize, because our 2yo is doing this, also. When he unbuckles, I sternly tell him to "put the straps over your shoulders and buckle back up." So far, he listens, but I know the day is coming when he will figure out the harder between-the-leg buckle.
The only thing we have come up with is duct tape. But he has figured out how to unwind that now, too. 
We aren't in any position to buy a new seat at this time; maybe a new lock wouldn't be prohibitive.
His guardian angel really works overtime!

We all must have the same toddler. I have looked and looked and haven't seen anything I thought would confine mine. So... we pull over and discipline when he gets out. It's just not open to negotiation.
If you do anything to make it harder to unlatch, put a pair of scissors in your van to cut the straps with in an emergency. I had to do that when our engine was on fire once. The lock bwtween the legs was stuck. Thank goodness there was a pair of scissors in the van.

That is an excellent suggestion for scissors! I have often thought about what would happen if we need to get out quickly, and a seat belt sticks.

One suggestion I've heard before for the bottom buckle is turning it so the button faces his body before you buckle him up. It might make it a little more difficult for him to get at it. Good luck!
