My 8 yr old is reading the American Girl Addy books.
A nearby theatre will have a play about a slave girl and the underground railroad this November. So, right now, the planned rabbit trail for her is the underground railroad and Civil War era.
Any book suggestions?
Any important profiles?
Any hands-on sites?

We did Addy during Feb/March and the neatest project we did was am ABC paper quilt of famous black Americans, trying to focus on famous black Female Americans to combine Black & Women's History Months. A few I can remember tonight...
A was for Addy, of course!
B was for Bessie Coleman, first African American Female Pilot
H was for Hattie McDaniel from Gone with the Wind
M was for Marian Anderson
O was for Oprah Winfrey
P was for Phyllis Wheatley
S was for Sojourner Truth
T was for Toni Morrison
I hope that makes sense tonight!

I feel silly recommending the obvious classic picture books, but
Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt
Follow the Drinking Gourd
Some other books are another good Deborah Hopkinson book - Under the Quilt of Night.
And
Secret Signs along the Underground Railroad
Friend on Freedom River
I love the Chicago Review Press books and they have one on this topic - Underground Railroad for Kids

Thank you for the great links. We haven't heard of Secret Signs or Friend on Freedom River (which I see my library has  ), so I'm excited to have some new books to look for.

oh, and National Geographic has an interactive feature as if you were traveling on the Underground Railroad.
Chatham Hill has a variety of games based on the UR.

Unfortunately, the Secret Signs one is more obscure. I had to get it through interlibrary loan. It is a good one though because it is a different method of secret communicaiton than the quilt one which is in so many books. It's about Underground Railroad "directions" hidden in sugar egg scenes. We ran across it when we were making and looking for info on sugar eggs.

Freedom Like Sunlight is a great introducation to several famous African-Americans including these which could be added to a quilt like Jennifer suggested (some were listed already) - beautiful illustrations.
Athletes Wilma Rudolph; musicians Marian Anderson, and Billie Holiday; and activists Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, and Rosa Parks, are included.
Here is a NPS site that lists the Underground Railroad sites that are National Historic Landmarks or Parks. I learned something I didn't know - that we have a site here in Denver that is connected to the an abolitionist with connections to the Underground Railroad. Are distant field trips up your alley, Cay? I wish I could take a "field trip" to some of these sites.

If you want a chapter book, A Lantern in the Window by Aileen Fisher is good. OOP of course but you may be able to find it in a library.
I found this site that has a few resources while looking for more info about the book.

Just read last night - Almost to Freedom. My ten-year old dd really liked it. It tells a young girl's dramatic escape from slavery via the Underground Railroad, from the perspective of her beloved rag doll. It was really touching to hear the story fromt eh dolls perspective - one of the reasons I think my daughter enjoyed it so much. Dolls are such a universal connection for most little girls. The book was a little sad, but also joyful. Very touching.
Here is a sample of the kind of historic ragdoll that inspired the author to write this book.
Anice follow-up would be to make a rag doll or another rag doll making activity.

Cay,
I just borrowed a book today from Sarah's music teacher (she takes guitar) who made a wonderful quilt at her school with her students last year. It's The Underground Railroad Sampler.
Though Sarah and I won't make a full quilt, I'm hoping to choose one or two blocks to make to help with our quilting unit throughout the Prairie Primer that we're going to do.
I'm also hoping to use Pattern Blocks to make some of these patterns in the book for math as well. AND I'd like to make a paper quilt possibly (or the small version from the book) using scrapbook paper using this book.
Before every square, it gives the history of that quilt square in the quilts used on the Underground Railroad. You can see the book here: The Underground Railroad Sampler

Tracy, I just checked and my library has "Lover's Knot" by Eleanor Burns but not this one. Rats!

Oh, that's too bad Cay.  I think it'd be a really good resource. Maybe there's something like it in your library with some investigation???
