Hi!
I'm not sure if this is the right forum for my question, but here goes.
I noticed at Amazon that there are several books about Beatrix Potter. They all look so wonderful! My library has 1. It is so disappointing. What I'd like to find is a book full of pictures of where she lived, story of her life, and samples of her art.
Which books is your favorite about Beatrix Potter for you? Which is a must have?
I am really drawn to books and stories and pictures of the English countryside. (I love all of Herriot's books by and about him). So, if you happen to know of any other books that would fit this let me know too!

Was Beatrix Potter a Christian? I have heard she had a sad or lonely childhood. Knowing about an author's faith really enriches the reading of their works for me. THanks!

My favorite is "The Story of Beatrix Potter" by Sally G. Carr and Bornwen Hall. It came with a unit study from Calvert, which was excellent, but then I'm a BIG fan of hers  The book includes many pictures of her and her family, many taken by her father, who was an amature photographer and early sketches and art work. I looked at library offerings, but this was by far, the best, IMHO.

Well, this isn't a book, but I just *love* her website!! It's so pretty, and there are pictures of the Lake District (on my dream list of places to visit), plus some of her other work, and her bio. Plus fun things for the kids!

There is a new biographical movie being made about Beatrix Potter. Renee Zellweger will be playing Miss Potter, which is the name of the movie. No release date yet.

Wow! I'd LOVE to see a movie made about her and filmed in that area! I did get 2 books about her from the library. Very neat. I'm in love with Yorkshire, England (never been there yet). It was nice to see all the pictures of her growing up (she didn't change much!). I found a cookbook dedicated to her that had alot of information about her. She seemed like a really neat lady.
I'm seeing that this area of England is popular with all the people I like: James Herriot, Beatrix Potter, Charlotte Mason, and I can't think of the other person. So many stories were set in that area like Secret Garden. This area inspired alot of wonderful people who have taught me about cherishing life's simple pleasures and beauty.

I just read in Entertainment Weekly (twaddle, yes, but fun  ) the movie will be released December 29th.

Hello Ana,
Although those people were connected with the north of England they lived in two separate areas - the Lake District (Beatrix Potter, Charlotte Mason, Arthur Ransome) and North Yorkshire (James Heriot, The Secret Garden). Both beautiful, but different. The Lake District has lakes and mountains (low by most standards, but the highest we have!); Yorkshire has moorland and the Dales.
I am biased as my mother is a Yorkshirewoman and I the Yorkshire Moors are one of my absolutely favourite places  . James Heriot lived in the town of Thirsk, on the edge of both the Moors and the Yorkshire Dales. The real Skeldale House in Thirsk is now a tourist attraction. A very good friend of ours is a cousin of Alf Wight ("James Heriot"'s real name) - his father says visiting a house he spent time in as a child and finding it turned into a museum was a very bizarre experience! My mother has a nice book about James Heriot's Yorkshire - I think it is this one. Another book of memoirs set in the Yorkshire Dales that I have been meaning to read for a while is The Other Side of the Dale by Gervase Phinn, a rural schools' inspector. Like the Heriot books, there is a whole series of these.
A Lake District book I thoroughly enjoyed was The Tale of Hill Top Farm by Susan Wittig Albert, which is fiction but has the real Beatrix Potter as a character. I know it was recommended by someone here a while ago.

Oh Kathryn,
See how confused I am! My dh took me too a British tea room down here last Mother's Day. It was a tiny place in the back of the shop, but the British lady who owned it made the whole place a wonderful experience. She said that Britain is becoming very commercialized (lots of McDonald's everywhere) but the Lake District was still untouched. Is that true?
So the Lake District and Yorkshire are not the same places? I do have that Herriot's Yorkshire book and have enjoyed watching the BBC videos from the library.
Where are the Cotswold's? I heard that's a really pretty area as well.
I've enjoyed looking through several Beatrix Potter books including a cookbook named for her. It did include some pictures of the area where she lived. I love the stone walls and homes, the rolling hills, the sheep dotting the hills, and the attention to beauty that so many have there.
It seems like some books focus on Potter's life and sketches, whereas other books provide more pictures. I'm still trying to go through all the books our library has. I have yet to really read through one cover to cover--maybe because I still enjoy looking at all the pictures!
Someday, my dh has promised to take me England. So, I'm gathering all this information so that I know where I want to go. I'd like to see the famous places, but I'd like to focus on the places that Brits themselves love there. I'm glad I have some time!
