Not sure I should post here, but I have trouble eating enough throughout the day and keeping my weight up while nursing into the 2nd year. My little guy is now 15 months and I'm really needing to put on some weight or for sure not lose anymore. For what it's worth it's not thyroid related I just happen to be one of those women that has a metabolism that burns what I eat fast
I'd love any tips here on how you manage your meals/snacks and what your favorite high calorie foods are that aren't junk!! I'm not allergic to any foods that I know of either.
Thanks so much for any ideas, PMing is fine too

Well, that shoots any ideas I had.
I'm in the same boat as you, possibly compounded a bit by the "allergy diet" I eat from when the baby is showing signs of trouble (luckily now I can apparently eat more, although MY health seems to suffer...)
The only two things I can add that are *healthy* are avacados (high in fat but good for you) and adding healthy oils to pastas, salads, etc, a little more of a dose than you normally would.
Looking forward to hearing other ideas! I'd appreciate if anyone has ideas on how to add weight only to my arms, legs, and face, because whatever I *do* gain lately is going RIGHT to my belly.

Hummus and pitas, avacadoes, cheeses, protein shakes, nuts, (good)chips and organic salsa, Whole grain toast with p-nut butter & honey, . . .
I would add these as snacks in addition to complete meals.

The book Eat Fat, Lose Fat by Sally Fallon is one of the best nutrition books that I have ever read (as well as her cook book Nourishing Traditions).
So, why am I recommending a book that talked about losing weight? Well she also mentions that if you are underweight and you eat this diet you will gain weight! She has a whole host of recipes in the book too!
For what it's worth....

Have you tried those high-calorie Ensure drinks? When we were trying to keep weight on my Dad during chemo, this is what his doctors always recommended. Lots of good vitamins, etc....and lots of calories.
Just a thought.....

Thank you, I hadn't heard of the Sally Fallon book, I'll check my library!! I'm not a huge fan of Ensure but maybe they've got more flavor choices than before. Another related question about Protein drinks, does anyone have a favorite brand of "powder" they like to add to smoothies/shakes, etc.
Loving all your suggestions, thank you and if there's more, I'm all ears

I think you could make some yummy smoothies with added protein powder to up your calorie intake. I know I have some recipes somewhere -- I'll try to hunt them down.
In the meantime, I found this recipe (haven't tried it but I have used the trader joe's ingredients - do you have one?)[edited to add: I don't know about the naked juice mango nectar, but I'm sure you could do without it. Also, I don't defrost the mango before putting it in my blender)
In a blender put:
˝ cup Naked Juice mango antioxidant juice
˝ cup Trader Joe’s plain lowfat organic yogurt
1 cup Trader Joe’s frozen mango, defrosted in the Microwave
˝ a banana
˝ a cup of frozen organic blueberries
1 scoop Trader Joe’s Soy Protein powder
1 scoop Trader Joe’s Egg and Milk protein powder
˝ cup ice cubes
Blend until smooth. You may need to use a spoon to help mix in the renegade protein powder. Of course substitute ingredients as desired. Strawberries, fresh mangoes, etc...
About 400 calories, of which about 150 are protein (about 30 grams of protein), and the rest are primarily carbohydrates.
Wishing that I had your problem ,
Jen

Meredith,
How old are you? I'm asking because I used to have trouble keeping weight on until I turned 35. Then for some reason, some of my pregnancy fat just lingered. If you're under 35, maybe this will happen to you too.

Oh, you dearheart, ahem, I'm 41, and I've always had this issue after having my babies
I gain around 60# with each and then 30 falls off within 2-4 weeks, then I'm usually back to my pre-preg weight by the 1 year mark. It's a metabolic thing, I keep hoping for the "older you get the harder it is to lose weight" to kick in but so far it hasn't happened.
Thanks for your insight!

Oh, this is certainly not my problem, Meredith. After #8 something *happened* and I CAN NOT LOSE WEIGHT---especially from my abdomen this time and I usually drop that right away since I have a long torso (I'm 6'.) I think something happens to me when I am nursing that is the opposite of what is supposed to happen---I get fatter!!!
But I'll tell you, nothing makes me gain like sugar and alcohol! Okay, I know those aren't good.....
And I agree about all of those wonderful fats like avocados and cheese. Oh, life without those!!!! But don't forget BUTTER and cream. They are actually good sources of absorbable vitamin A and have been wrongly blacklisted. They are essential for my children being healthy and full.
I have two children who can not keep weight on no matter what we do---due to the CF--- but they would be wasting away if it were not for the Carnation Instant Breakfast "milkshakes" (recommended by the CF Foundation clinic), of all things! We mix the powder with Vitamin D whole milk and sometimes even 1/2 and 1/2. (Sometimes additional chocolate syrup!!! )
You actually have the blessing of being able to sloooooow down and not worry about your activity level and if you have moved around enough during the day.... You may be burning more energy than you realize through a busy-mom work day. You can have peace just sitting there reading all day to your babies and not moving a muscle!!!!
Enjoy your bountiful diet---God is good!
