I'm starting a new from Vitamins and Supplements because I need help in this one area. I'm kicking myself because I always seem to have tunnel vision, and focus on the problems at hand, and don't look further down and plan for future problems.
I'm high risk for osteoporosis. Not hereditary, but many of the other factors. I'm adding weight bearing exercise to my routine, but need to ask about calcium. Marilyn Shannon didn't recommend large amounts of calcium for child-bearing years, so I never did. Now I'm thinking I need to add, because I don't see anywhere else in my diet. I have to add magnesium and Vitamin D...I also know there are a wide range of calciums, and not all are aborbed. That's been one of my hesistancies...why take something that isn't even going to work. Is calcium really important? Am I too late? Where's the buggy eyed emoticon?
Can you suggest brands and regimens for me?

Jenn,
I just met with a nutritionist yesterday and her recommmendation to me was to take Bone-Up for calcium. It is absorbed very quickly and also contains magnesium and Vitamin D. I'm to take 3 capsules daily, except during menstration, when I should increase intake to 6 capsules a day. You can probably find Bone-Up at your local health food store.

I use this company's "Natural Calm" with great results and recent;y I used Cal Mag for my ds with severe muscle spasms. Their product is absorbed easily by the body. The Cal Mag should be mixed with something acidic like O.J. for best results.

Jenn, have a look at this site I have just become a dealer (much cheaper way to stay on it permanently and with a big family, though in saying that it is not expensive compared to taking suppliments) for this company in Australia, it is Terramin Clay, (this is a calcium based clay - all clays are different) an edible clay that I got onto to further my detoxification of my original mercury poisioning and the effects of a nuclear radiation scan last year. The incredible thing about it, is that it detoxifys AND remineralizes in a unique and natural way.
NASA uses it for their astonauts for they suffer servere calcium loss from their bones due to spending so much time in space. NASA had a study done back in the mid sixties to find the solution and they found calcium tablets did not alter the situation but clay was far and above the answer! So I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! And lucky for you, it is in the US!!!!
NASA's endorsement is a very powerful testimony for me.
I think it has to do with the natural combination of other elements/minerals with the calcium that support the complete or effective absorption of the calcium and clay has that natural God-given balance.
Clay has been used since Noah (if you think about flood deposits) by cultures all throughout history and even pregnant women use it during there pregnancies, so I know that I would continue the use if I were fall pregnant - calcium is something that is really drawn on then.
Here is the direct link on the site to the NASA findings - this clay so good for so many other things too, we have a book about it and it is great reading - my mother suffers from asthma and she was having an attack the other night, she decided to have a glass of clay instead of the puffer and she settled down very quickly, she has been telling everyone since, it was quite remarkable for her. Clay cleans up allergens in the blood, all that is toxic and foreign to the body. It is used for children who have autisms and syndroms if the parents believe it may have a brain toxicity factor to it.
Maybe do a google search on the words, "edible terramin clay" and see what other information you can read on it.

Just wanted to add - I have been more consistent with taking my calcium these last nine months - after reading that it also helped with weight loss.

Jenn,
I cannot verify this, but I'll share something I learned in a conversation just yesterday. I was talking about calcium with two friends and one said that her sister, who is a nurse, told her that taking Tums is just as good as most calcium supplements. And it is just a fraction of the cost. Has anyone else heard or read that?

Jenn, I take Shaklee's Cal-Mag. When I started taking it, I was severely calcium deficient. I had heel spurs between my achilles tendon and the bone which were supposed to be surgically removed. The healing period would have been almost 6 months off my feet due to the removal and replacement of the tendon. I decided to look into some alternatives. The spurs, coupled with the arthritic joints from Lupus, made me suspect the calcium deficiency. I began taking the Cal-Mag and within 3 months, the spurs were completely gone.
It is also very important not to drink carbonated beverages (diet or regular) if you have any type of calcium deficiency as the carbonation robs the bones of their calcium.

Rebecca, that is interesting what you have said - so remineralizing the body does not only stop the build up of spurs, but actually removes them? These heel spurs, are they the same sort of thing as knobbly fingers where you get build up around the joints?

Yes, that is what occurred with me. I understand that the spurs are really calcium that is leached from the bones and deposited in the joints that are most used. For me (I was a runner in hs and college), the joints most used were my feet.
During college, I had my hands x-rayed because of the severe joint pain caused by the Lupus. The doctor showed me the extensive damage to the joints and told me that they were degenerating. After taking the cal-mag for a while, the lumps on the joints as well as the pain, had disappeared. My hands look and feel completely normal now.
I do believe that the body can heal itself when given the proper nutrients.

What about when you have calcium deposits ~ too much calcium built up in certain places? I had a kidney stone that was too large to pass a couple of years ago. The doctor told me that the stone was made up of calcium deposits. My bil had bumps on his arms that were made up of calcium deposits. How do I get the right amount of calcium to the right places in my body without ingesting too much?

The way that I understand it is that the calcium deposits do not signify too much calcium but too little. Apparently the body, when deficient for long enough, tries to store the calcium that you do have in places where it is needed the most, the most active joints or organs (kidneys). When the body is given the proper amount of calcium to function smoothly, the deposits will dissolve and be reabsorbed because they are no longer needed. Kidney stones still would need to pass (not be reabsorbed) but they probably would not reoccurr if you upped the calcium level.
