Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm looking at buying an animal encyclopedia we can use for reference during our CHC Tour the Continents project next year.

Looking around on Amazon, I saw the Kingfisher Illustrated Animal Encylopedia and the Kingfisher First Animal Encyclopedia, and several others with similar names.

I am wondering if it would be better to buy a reference book written for older kids (like the Kingfisher Illustrated Animal Encyclopedia) or one written for younger kids (like the Kingfisher First Animal Encyclopedia). My children are 7, 4, and 2. Does anyone have either of the books I mentioned? Do you actually use them? I know they'll outgrow the children's encylopedia in a few years, but will the more advanced one be too advanced for even reading aloud?

Thanks!

I have this Animals of the World book and it gets a lot of use. The text is really for children older than yours, but you could weed out nuggets of information for younger ones and the illustrations are excellent. I like the way it is set up, with double page spreads for different types of animals, divided into sections starting with the simplest, smallest animals (protists, sponges and so on) and ending with mammals. It is a book you would get years of use from.

Amazon doesn't give any informations, but I searched a bit further and it looks as though this is the same book.

Hi Dawn,

We have the DK Animal Encyclopedia which is similar and I find all three of my boys (11, 7 next month and 4.5) really enjoy it. Weve had it for 2-3 years, I think, and have used it anytime we are studying (or just curious about) an animal. I don't find the text is too advanced (sometimes I "explain what they meant"). Sometimes they copy down information for their science notebooks. I think they like the size and scope of it - they call it the Great Big Book of Everything!

I have seen the Kingfisher one at B&N and it is beautiful! Maybe someone else can give you better details about that particular encyclopedia, but I thought I'd share our experience with the DK version.

Hope that helps a little.

Thanks for the review of the DK Encyclopedia, Dawn. I was looking at that one, too, but I was too lazy to put in the links to every encyclopedia I was considering.
