I'm grabbing something Gwen just posted on the Family Prayer Life - Philosophical thread.
There's been quite a bit written about the rosary lately and, something our new pastor (administrator actually because we still don't have a bishop ) said when he was here last month, has me wondering about the rosary's impact to our prayer life and its significance within our faith life.

Having said that, the Church encourages devotion to the Rosary but it is not part of the official prayer of the Church (if that's incorrect, someone help me out). |

Our new pastor is another LaSalette Missionary (which we're thrilled about!!! ) but, he had a funeral while he was here "scouting" the parish. All Catholics here have a rosary said during the wake. Often there are many rosaries: Knights of Columbus, Ladies Altar Society, Cursillo members---depending on what organization the person was a member of.
And our pastor approached the secretary with: "Another rosary? What's the deal with all these rosaries around here?"
(We also have a pro-life rosary said before each Mass.)
The secretary was at a loss and fumbled something about that's how Cajuns are...meaning very traditional, clinging to the old ways, very devotional. Now word is out that he's probably a liberal since he said this.
But he also goes to daily Adoration and seems to be very prayerful and devout. And at the apparition of LaSalette, Mary encouraged the children to pray the rosary. So I'm not sure what he was implying. Perhaps he was just kidding around.
I went looking and found this awesome Mary Question Page
Do other states and churches have a strong devotion to the rosary? This pastor is from Wisconsin.

Hmmm... I would tend to think that this priest isn't use to seeing so many people praying the rosary. I can't recall seeing people reciting the rosary at any Catholic wake I've attended.
However, I've been to various parishes around here where people gather after daily Mass and Saturday morning Mass to recite the rosary. To the best of my knowledge, that is the only time people gather at the church to say the rosary.
I do think Eucharistic Adoration is more prevalent in the parishes around here. We have several churches that have 24/7 Eucharistic Adoration and the other churches that don't, offer Eucharistic Adoration once a week.
Given an opportunity to pray the rosary in a group or alone, I prefer praying the rosary at Eucharistic Adoration. I just love sitting at the feet of Christ and soaking in his love.

Great to hear that Mare, just what Cardinal Rigali says here amongst other important points under the sub heading of "Mary leads us to Jesus."

Ok, I'm just chuckling here b/c I had the honor of meeting Cardinal Rigali today at the Installation Mass of a dear friend of mine. What a peace and joy he exudes!
Thanks for sending the article. It was wonderful to reread. This time I can actually hear the Cardinal's voice as I read it.
Peace,

I attend St. Margaret Mary's in Wichita, Kansas. At least 2 Sundays a month, the Rosary is said as a group before Mass begins. I've visited other parishes in this diocese where the Rosary is always said before Sunday Mass.
Every wake I've been to in this diocese has included a group Rosary.
There have been several articles in our diocesan newspaper encouraging people to pray the Rosary.
There is also a WONDERFUL communinty of nuns here--the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Guess what--these ladies have a wonderful devotion to the Rosary as well and have given talks and workshops on the Rosary at our local Spiritual Life Center. They also practice the First Saturdays devotion and invite the lay faithful to go to Mass and pray with them on the First Saturdays at their convent.
I also see Rosaries dangling from a lot of rear view mirrors here...don't know if the drivers are actually *praying* them, though!
That's what's going on here in Wichita, Kansas!

A few years ago I read Sr. Lucia's book. In it she addressed some common questions that she had been asked over the years regarding the apparition of Our Lady of Fatima to her and the other children. She was often asked why Our Lady requested the daily recitation of the rosary. After all, wasn't the Mass the greatest prayer? Why wouldn't Our Lady ask that people go to Mass everyday? Sr. Lucia clarified that yes, although the Mass IS the greatest prayer, not everyone in fulfilling their duties in life would be able to attend daily Mass. But then she added that ANYONE can pray the rosary every day. In fact, she said, (and I'm paraphrasing her words) 'you don't even need the rosary beads to pray the rosary...most of us have been given ten fingers.' WHEW! When I read that it left me shakin' in my boots! I realized that (at least for me) there is no excuse not to pray the rosary, what, with the fact that I have ten fingers and all!!! But, just for the record, I very much still struggle with saying my rosary every day!! And in my diocese in Canada, the rosary doesn't seem too encouraged, with the exception of the parishes of a few faithful pastors. I find that when the rosary is prayed publicly in Churches, it has come from the initiative of a few of the lay faithful.
