Jackdaws: Picture the Middle Ages

I would love opinions on this specific title or Jackdaws in general. I don't have any experience with them, but I am thinking of adding this title to our ed. plan ... which I'm scrambling to finish while my youngest naps, because it's due tomorrow, and I should have had it in the mail today, but them's the breaks when a stomach bug is ripping through your household

I used "Picture the Renaissance" and liked it pretty well. Of course, there was all the usual "reformation" rhetoric to contend with, but no surprise given the historical period in question. I really liked how the book was divided into art, architecture, philosophy, religion

,music,exploration, literature and so on---very handy and easy to use. I would use the resource again.

We've used Jackdaw packets a lot and love them. However, I've noticed they get VERY "pc" the closer you get to the modern era. Packets on the Plague, Byzantium, the Crusades, 1066, the Armada and even, yes, Martin Luther, were great. It was from this latter packet that we extracted inspiration for one of our all time most fun history projects: Wanted Posters for Martin Luther. Oh, we had fun with that!

They definitely have some very creative suggestions for history activities! I have also found the colonial American history packets to be excellent.

PS Avoid getting the middle school versions that are available on some topics, like Columbus. IMHO they are pure twaddle---stick with the highschool versions and adapt them as needed.

As best I can tell, the Middle Ages package is only available for grade 5-8. My older two will be 11 and 7 this year and I planned to tweak some of the activities for 7 yo.

I think I will go ahead and order it. I'm pulling together the Middle ages unit myself so i can use all the help I can get.

Dawn, I *think* "Picture the Middle Ages" is just a book rather than an entire packet (tho I may be wrong, been wrong before!) and it is more tothe Middle School level-but it's good.

PS A really good companion to that would be the packet on the Crusades (well, late Middle Ages, anyway...) We really enjoyed that one.
