My ds (12yo) is less than enthusiastic about studying art. I would like to find some artists that he would like so when I say something like "Look at this really neat picture by...." he doesn't roll his eyes and act bored. I think Winslow Homer is a good one, any other suggestions? He likes everything outdoorsy - nature, fishing, etc. He also likes military battles. Thanks!

As a mother of an almost 11 yo boy, I hear ya!

I have a book titled "The Western Paintings of Frank C. McCarthy. LOTS of paintings of horses, nature, cowboys, and native americans. You could do some Remington sculptures too.

Remington is great so if you go that western route, another specific artist to add is Charles M. Russell


Or another idea - pick a particular theme that would appeal to a boy and then compare renditions by different painters.
For example:
Weyden -St. George and the Dragon
Raphael - St. George and the Dragon
Martorell -St. George Killing the Dragon

I'm taking notes for my boys. I love your last suggestion, MaryM. Along the same lines, I was remembering today's feast of Saints Peter and Paul. I put in my blog the famous paintings of Caravaggio and thought these would REALLY appeal to boys. Click on the captions to bring up more about them.

I just ran across a different book by author/illustrator Taylor Morrison who seems to do a lot of historical biography. Several other books were listed on the jacket cover - one of them being Civil War Artist. It sounds intriguing and great for a study like this.

I am really impressed with the book we got on wildfire that I'll be checking out the rest of Morrison's books including this Cilvi War Artist one.

What about Sir Edwin Landseer ? Lots of dogs and outdoorsy paintings. I love his paintings of Newfoundlands

I also second the recommendation of Charles Russell. We went to the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City last year and got to see some of the works of "Cowboy Charlie" and Remington. My boys loved it!
