Hi!
My daughters and I will be attending my niece's bridal shower and we have been asked to bring an appetizer. I've been perusing cookbooks and web sites, but thought I'd ask here. What are some of your favorites? It's supposed to be something salty and/or savory, not sweet. Thanks!

You know, I was just at Costco today and they were handing out samples of Ritz Crackers, smudged with cream cheese, and then topped with a (part of?) sundried tomato.
It was declicious!

Speaking of CostCo we picked up some tiny marinated mozzarella balls and there was a recipe for a very easy appetizer. Put one mozzarella ball and one cherry tomato on a frilly top toothpick. Doesn't that sound yummy?!! I can hardly wait to try it.

We love to buy those little smokies and then I heat them in the oven with brown sugar drizzled over them.

My favorite is stuffed mushrooms. De-stem mushrooms, chop the stems up, saute with shallots, chopped ham, and bread crumbs in a bit of butter, then a bit of vermouth, then cream, cook 10 minutes or so then stuff the mushrooms. Bake for 15 minutes in a 375 degree oven.
I also like sushi rolls with crab and avocado.
or Deviled Eggs, with each egg half decorated differently (i.e., an anchovy roll, a slice of pimiento-stuffed green olive, chopped chives, mushroom duxelles, etc.

I have an artichoke recipe a little different from Dawn's. The cheese is grated on top, and when my friend made it, she always had a section where she would "hold the cheese" because I was lactose intolerant. So I always liked this version.
1 14 oz can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped
1 clove garlic, mashed
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Parmesan cheese, grated, for garnish
1. Combine all ingredients in a small casserole dish and sprinkle generously with grated Parmesan cheese.
2. Bake 20 minutes at 350 degrees.
3. Serve with assorted crackers, chips, or baguette slices.
Tomato appetizers are wonderful! If you can get fresh tomatoes (I mean garden grown), just slice them up, add slices of mozarella cheese and basil and drizzle with a viniagrette.
Or bruschetta with a tomato topping...fresh salsa. I can't wait until our tomatoes come in!

Mine too! I keep it real simple though and just put some cheese (literally any kind from cubes to absolutely delicious herbal spreads) in the caps and grill them (if you have an oven of course use it) Sooo good!

You and me both! Nothing better than a ripe tomato fresh from the vine!

Bumping this up in hopes of more ideas for wintertime appetizer party starters. Like, say, one, that might be tomorrow. We're having an antipasto and a hot artichoke shrimp dip but I want at least one more...

What about Black Bean Pinwheels? They can be made ahead and chilled, nothing to do but set them out at party time and watch them disappear!
8 oz cream cheese
1 tsp cumin
1 garlic clove, minced
4 thin flour tortillas, warmed so they won't split
3/4 cup black beans
3/4 cup chopped roasted mild green chiles
6 Tbsp grated cheese
1/4 cup chopped olives
2 Tbsp fresh cilantro, minced
Salsa to accompany
1. Combine the cream cheese, cumin, and garlic.
2. Spread the mixture evenly over the tortillas. Sprinkle the beans, chile, cheddar cheese, olives and cilantro equally over the cheese mixture and roll the tortillas up snug. Wrap in plastic and chill for at least 2 hours.
3. Cut into 3/4-inch slices with a sharp knife. Let the slices sit, covered with plastic wrap, at room temperature for a few minutes before serving them, accompanied with salsa.

We are making the artichoke dip too, as well as crabbies, which can be made ahead, frozen and then quickly reheated before serving.
I also like doing kielbasa in the crockpot. Mix yellow mustard and grape jelly to taste, pour over chunks of kielbasa and cook all in either the crockpot or on the stove-top. The latter produces a crispier edge and a more carmelized result. Serve with toothpicks.
If anyone has one, I'd love a recipe for a cheese ball.

Crabbies are the best! (I use Cheez Whiz when I can't get Old English...which is often...and I don't use seasoned salt...) They are my most popular appetizer.
A couple of easy cheese things from my lovely mom...
Silky Roquefort Spread
6 oz. Roquefort cheese
2 3-oz. pkgs. cream cheese
1/4 lb. butter or margarine
dash of Worcestershire sauce
Allow all items to come to room temperature. Beat first 3 items together in a bowl. Add Worcestershire sauce and beat until fluffy. This makes 2 cups, which you can refrigerate, covered, up to a month. Serve with Norwegian flatbread or other plain crackers.
The second doesn't have a recipe. You take a (block) package of cream cheese, pour cocktail sauce over it, and garnish with little cooked shrimps and some shredded crab meat. Serve with crackers. My mom zings up the cocktail sauce with a dash of Tabasco. This is super-easy but everyone loves it!
Now I am hungry. I'm sitting in my basement with a tray of sugared spiced nuts cooling next to me so the cats won't get it.

I'm serving spanakopita (phyllo dough triangles filled with feta and sauteed spinach) and samosas (spring roll wrapper stuffed with mashed/chopped potatoes, spices and peas).
Also spiced nuts. Recipe here

Ok, here's something I had at a get together a couple of weeks ago. It was really yummy, but not remotely healthy like many of the suggestions here. I actually thought it was sausage wrapped in bacon (heart attack on a toothpick?), but it was Pineapple (!!!) wrapped in bacon. They used canned pineapple chunks, wrapped in 1/2 slice of raw bacon, I think the oven was 375 for about 45 mins-1 hour until the bacon in crispy.
If you're of the school of thought that parties are for food decadence and culinary debauchery, this might be the recipe for you

Cheese Ball
1 small jar Old English cheese
1 small jar Roka Bleu
2 8 oz. pkg. cream cheese (softened)
(I think the jars of cheese are made by Kraft; they're found in the dairy dept. near cheese spreads)
Blend well. Let set in refrigerator until firmer for handling (approx. 2 hrs). Scrape out of mixing bowl with rubber spatula onto wax paper, trying to shape into a ball or log form. Finish shaping, using your hands on the undersides of the wax paper. Coat with chopped nuts (such as pecans or walnuts), or real bacon bits, or if you'd like something a little fancier stud the outside with whole almonds to look like a pinecone. You may have to use a little pressure with whatever you coat the ball or log with so that the ingredients will adhere to the cheese mixture.
Serve with your favorite crackers or relishes (really yummy on celery!).

A cute, easy, yummy, red and green appetizer is:
Spread Cream cheese on Boboli
Spread some Pesto over Cream Cheese (green)
Put Canned Roaster Red Peppers on top (red)
Bake according to Boboli instructions

Here's a wheat free, yummy warm dip/spread. Easy!
Spread slices of mozzerella into bottom of baking pan.
Add Roasted Red Peppers on top (I prefer the non-marinated type).
Bake until cheese is melted.
Guests can put on wheat free crackers or triscuit.
